Need specialized info. I want to load 280 gr. cast, gas checked, RN boolits for my .35 Whelen. I have Reloder 15 powder and am looking for the maximum accuracy with this powder and boolit.
Does anyone have experience with this combination or something similar? Hoping for 1,800 - 2,200 fps range. will be shooting 100 - 200 yds.

Thanks

What bullet make model serial number do you have?
What rifle? Barrel lenth and twist rate?

I have had good luck with 40.0 gr. of IMR 4064 with a similar 290 gr. boolit. My best guess is around 1890 FPS but I was getting better accuracy (1-1/2" at 100 yds) with 39.0 IMR 4064 at around 1870 FPS. This was in a 26" 1 in 14" Twist barrel.
Re15 being somewhat slower I would feel comfortable starting at 40.0 or even 41.0 gr.

Good Luck,

John

The rifle is a Remington 700, 22" barrel with the classic stock. I don't have the twist rate.
The bullet comes from Lyman's 358009AV two cavity mold.

Remington list that to be 16 twist rate.

It looks like you're aiming for near max loads so I'd just back off the listed charge for a jacketed bullet about 20% and start up from their.

I shoot 35 Whelan in a rebarreled 1917 American Enfield with a 1 in 12 twist, using Lyman boolit # 358009 which is a round nose GC of similar weight. I use 40 grains of IMR 4320 which is slightly slower in burning rate than Reloder 15. They're actually pretty close. Velocity is in the 1800-1900 fps range. Whelans, according to Cartridges of The World by Barnes, do better with the faster twist of 1:12 when using heavier boolits, and powders of medium burning to slightly slower burning rates. LLS
