Wife and I found a forgotten cemetery that ironically is for sale on a tax lien. The town record just says "land" so we went to look. Found the cemetery all grown over with trees and a number of Veteran Headstones. In the morning we are going over to place flags on them. Some date to the Civil War.

My Uncle I never got to meet, Monday I will go weed around his and my grandparents grave along with my sisters then we will help with some of the civil war and Sioux Uprising grave sites. Guess we have a few headstones on the old ones to reset. This cemetery is pretty much taken care of by volunteers. The state mows it as part of the state park but weeding and flags are done by volunteers. Same for grave stone restoration and identification.

Thank you JonP, and thank you all! My oldest son just graduated high school on Thursday, and has enlisted in the Navy. He leaves for Basic on August 8. Believe me.....the family is feeling Memorial Day much more than we have in the past.

Before sitting down to the BBQ, burgers, hotdogs, potato salad & a tall, cool drink, REMEMBER that this day wasn't intended to be NATIONAL GLUTTONY DAY.
(Memorial Day was first called Decoration Day, when CSA mothers/widows/daughters started decorating the graves of CSA casualties. When the Union ladies joined the cemetery cleaning & beautification, the day was renamed Memorial Day. - Memorial Day now honors all US veterans, who have passed on.)

Our Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts placed flags and did some headstone clearing for about 1000 veteran graves in the Roseland Park cemetery in Berkley, MI yesterday. We volunteer every year to place and retrieve the flags for American Legion post 374.

In my opinion the most important service work we do.

This is from an email from one of my co-workers. My thoughts and prayers.

"Today is a solemn day for me. I don't pretend that I was a warrior. I didn't see combat. I slept in the same rack during the Gulf War as I did before and after. As a 20 something kid, I barely knew there was a war. My job was to bravely hide under the ocean for 100 days at a time. I do not diminish the necessity of that job, it was very important. I do not want to give the impression that I was something that I was not. It is hard for me to fathom being a combat veteran. I can understand how a service member follows orders and goes to combat. If called upon, I would have done so as well. Thankfully, by the Grace of God, I was not. As a non-combat Vet, I did lose brothers. Each year on Memorial Day I raise a glass to Rich. The memorial from his funeral is still in my Bible. So, to all those Brothers and Sisters that went before me, that stood in harm’s way, that braved the darkness so my family can live in the light. I salute you with the deepest heartfelt thanks for allowing me to have the incredible life that I have."

Ronald Reagan once said “As we honor their memory today, let us pledge that their lives, their sacrifices, their valor shall be justified and remembered for as long as God gives life to this nation.”

Remember that this weekend, have fun with your families, enjoy the people around you, but more than that, remember those who died and honor them by being thankful for the sacrifices that have been made to keep us free.

Thank each of you for all you do and have done in support of the defense of our nation, but I ask that you take time to remember that Memorial Day is not about veterans or military support.

Simply stated, it is a time to honor the fallen. All of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in support of a defensive posture that maintains the hopes, dreams and freedom of a nation. For them, I am forever grateful. Rest in peace brothers and sisters, thank you for your sacrifice.

I spend a bit of time on Memorial Day just remembering what we have for Freedom in our US of A., & what those who gave the ultimate price to defend our Freedoms actually means.

It is my hope & prayers that those who keep disrespecting the Flag, our Pledge of Allegiance & trying to ignore the U.S. Const., actually come to understand what was done & given freely by others who died defending those symbols & our heritage, thus allowing them to be Free to do what they try to do & maybe stop fighting against & trying to change what the principles are, in what is probably the most important document ever composed for Rights, Freedom & Liberty, with the exception of maybe the Magna Carta.

Just got back from attending a graduation party of my MBH's great-nephew. It was held in a AmLeg hall in west central MN. In the hall they had a photo that someone took of the National Cemetery at Ft. Snelling showing the markers all in a row, and a Bald Eagle perched on one of them. I about lost it.

I love living in a place where people still remember and are happy to be a part of something bigger than themselves.

Prayers for all of the fallen heroes and love for their sacrifice on this day and all days in between.

Was in my foot doctor's office and was right near Memorial Day about a year or so ago. She thanked me for my service and after that I reminded her that Memorial Day is to remember those that made the ultimate sacrifice in defending our country. And that Veterans Day is to thank all the vets past and present that fought for our country. Guess I must be getting old and ready for old fart status. Frank
