Team.

For those that have followed my posts you will know I am a great supporter of Jim at CBE and his Australian brass moulds. This is because:

1) He's almost local to me in New Zealand.
2) As his moulds are not mass produced their qualitiy is exceptional.
3) Jim is innovative in his designs especially for calibres most popular at our end of the world eg: .303 Brit, .310 Matini etc.

Jim has sent me his latest .303 mould for testing.

O/A length 1.250"
Nose to 1st groove (crimp?) .830"
Nominal Diameter nose .303"
Nominal Diameter driving bands .316"
GC shank .287"
240gr in WW.

Yesterday I set to casting and knocked out a couple of hundred in addition to some other designs (I can't stand running just one mould). Here is the bullet with a .22RF for comparison.

Jim has cut 'micro grooves on the bore riding nose to carry some hand applied lube. Great idea. Cast in clip on WW with approx 2% babbit mine measure .3035 on the nose, .316 on the first two driving bands and .317 on the rear band. 237gr on average.

For testing I chose my No4 MkII .303 and my .303 Pygmy as they are both proven accurate and wear Parker Hale 5 sights. Here are bullets and dummy rounds.

Today I tested both at 50m. The Pygmy was loaded with 21, 22, 23gr W748 and prodoced 1300-1480fps and groups of approx 1 inch. The 23gr group was getting tighter so I will test again with 23 and 24gr. Bullets ran into a .3165 sizing die to seat the gas check and lube. Not bad results.

The No4 MkII was loaded with 24, 26 and 28gr of Benchmark (BM2 down here). With the bullets were sized .314 I shot the 24gr first and the 3 rounds generated 1500fps and ONE hole at 50m!!!!!! 26 and 28gr grew to 3/4 and 1 1/4 respective and 1600 and 1740fps.

I will continue to test but first results show a DEVESTATINGLY accurate bullet. Seated as above in the No4 MkII the bullet engages and has five perfect engraved marks on the nose aiding bore alignment.

This would be a great game bullet and travelling at even a modest 1700fps in the 9.8 BHN alloy I cast it would upset very nicely at ranges out to 100m I am sure.

More soon.

That is an unusual and a unique idea! I think that the nose lube grooves have a great deal of potential. Does your friend Jim at CBE have a web address and if so could you post it? I sure would appreciate it........

Now, that is some shootin from a Smelly!
I love those rifles, the feel, even the trigger. I am going to watch this thread with some interest.
My Smelly likes paper patches a lot. She was originally built for accuracy from Lithgow, even has an armory installed cheek piece.
Here, very few 'smiths do work on the Enfields. I had wondered about the .303 Epps.
That is a real nice looking casting and mold. Good workmanship.

If you go to "Molds...Maintenance and Design" there is a list of manufacturers of molds. CBE is there.

Neat looking boolit there Jeffin NZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

KNAPPY: First service rifle shoot is coming up for me. I will shoot my "as issued" SMLE and Jim's 313 220 bullet at 2000fps. Mk VI duplicate load to comply with rules.

Jeff, I don't know if those things will mushroom every time at 1500fps, but being as long as they are, I would be willing to bet that they will tumble, and being that long, that will have a hell of an effect on whatever you are shooting.

Thank you Jeff! Good Luck with your match. Let us know how it turns out. I think that your results will be interesting to all of us........

Holy Smoly!

That reminds me of Kelly, but I think he still has him beat. Kelly had designs that you had to remove the bolt to insert it up through the action and after you got it in there, you could feel the nose of the bullet if you had anything less than a 24" barrel.

I wish CBE would make 4 cavity molds.

Team.

More tests today.

Shot the No4 MkII again with the 24gr Benchmark load. First group of the day and I think I had the "Geez, can I get a one hole group again" gitters as I put 2 in on hole with the third touching but the other 2 are slightly higher. Group is still 3/4 inch at 50m however.

Next I shot the .303 Pygmy again but this time with the W748 23gr and 24gr loads. As predicted the 24gr really pulled in the bullets and produced this at 50m for 3 shots.

Pretty happy really! Tomorrow I will move out to 100m and report.
