Dear Abby,

I have a revolver (S&W 686+ .357 Magnum Deluxe 3") on layaway, that I will pay off on June 9. After that, I will have to wait for my payment to clear, and for the vendor to ship it to my FFL.

What can I do to cope with these obsessive thoughts about all of the fun I expect to have with it when I finally have it?

ps - I have a mold and will cast some boolits for it this weekend, which may help.

Thanks,

Randy

Get a good supply of targets ready. It's OK to buy one or two boxes of factory ammo to start with (but not too many). Do as much meditation as you can to still your troubled mind...

Reload bunches of loads with different powders so you can begin the quest for the load that delivers one hole accuracy at 50 yards.
Get about 6 more moulds.... ( "is 6 enough, is 12 too many ?") One mould will just NOT do ! :kidding:

Prep Brass: clean, sort, size, trim, bell. Get a bucket full of prepped brass ready to load.

Hi, I'm Randy, and I am inflicted with obsessive thoughts about...

HI Randy and congrats on the purchase you are making.

These "Obsessive" thoughts are a healthy outpouring of your emotions. Anticipation of a coming pleasent event is really not an obsessive behavior in the Human male. The suggestions above are good ones and should be heeded. Remember the Boy Scout Motto: "Be Prepared." Your "obsessive" behavior however is just beginning. 1 Mould is not enough, 500 lbs of alloy is almost out, 1000 empty brass is no where near enough!
FWIW The additction never ends.

Welcome to the ADDICTION!

Randy...a small way I can feel your pain. I just came back from completing the 4473 on a like-new, pre-safety Rossi 92 that I can't pick up until sometime tomorrow (#%^&@+ Illinois waiting period!!). Dealer did let me handle and inspect the piece: full-length rifle w/24" full octagon barrel, brass receiver and furniture, dark oil finish on wood. Was sold as 'used' but I'd rate the condition as 95%+...near immaculate exterior and no wear marks on the the cartridge elevator or feed ramp. In the meantime, here I sit, at this stupid computer, with close to 1000 rounds of loaded .357 RF ammo and nothing to feed it to.

Should have waited on the mold and slugged the barrel first. Now you may have to buy another mold.

I ordered my Flintlock in March, won't get it until it's made in September, maybe in my hands in October. Grrrr. But I understand, and am glad the business is that good. I will be ordering a mold, flints, and turning some powder measures this summer!

I started reloading over 20 years ago. I thought at the time that it was a sickness that had no cure. I was wrong. I started casting in January of this year. I'm up to 7 molds and the little brown truck delivered 4 more today. Guess what I'll be doing tomorrow morning? I wish I had started casting 19 years ago.

Randy, good luck with your new 686, you'll love it. Mine loves the 158 grain bullets that I cast and powder coat for it. If you need a sponsor for your Casting/Reloading 12 step program I'm sure you'll find many volunteers on this forum.

Back to waiting for this gun again ... had to return it to S&W. The cylinder doesn't always turn, and the trigger sticks in it's rearward position. Other than that it was a blast putting 100 magnum rounds through it.

ps

I was diagnosed with this affliction in 1960. It's been a long hard recovery but I have been told that there is no permanent cure. I found this to be true, even though it subsided somewhat during a couple of divorces due to lack of funds to perpetrate this habit. But..alas, it returned with a vengeance and now, shows no signs of remission. The positive note...it is not terminal, but ,my brother, there is no cure. Make the best of it by having a substantial supply of primed and belled brass on hand for further trials. "Go now and pour yourself a hot one". Murf205

I have not found this step to be necessary.

At 50 yards, my 686 produces one hole targets with every load I feed it.
One shot per target.

198556198554198555William, I just couldn't stop at one so I ruined ,my one hole group with a few more but this is what my 686 usually does when I do my part. These are @ 40 yds IIRC. A 686 is worth the wait.

Murphy. Mine is similar. I have two of them and there are both More accurate than my 14 inch TC.
