Was at the range today with my buds. Terry was shooting a 9mm Makarov PA-63.
He ran out of 9mm Makarov ammo and started shooting cast boolited 380 ammo in the MAK.

No issues and good accuracy.

This was a new one on me. No issues, no problems

My p64 couldn't.
.380acp brass rattled around in the chamber and my cast .356 projectiles fell through the .363 bore.
I had heard of the field expedient cartridge swap, but it didn't work for me personally.

So, you never pulled the trigger on the 380 round?
Just looked and evaluated in a non-firing condition?
I probably would have done the same thing on the P64

, but Terry had done it before with his PA-63 , LOTS of times
and said less recoil and all was well.

I've read what pretty authoritative seeming opinions that the Soviets specified the Makarov round specifically so that their pistols could use captured .380 NATO ammunition, but NATO pistols couldn't use their 9x18.

Seems mostly legit; a .380 is a little loose, but the extractor holds it well enough that it fires (and if the extractor slips, the round will only go an extra millimeter), while a 9x18 won't even enter a .380 chamber (I've got both guns in the house, and have tried the fit, though I haven't actually fired .380 in my P64, because it came to me with 400 rounds of correct ammunition). And try a 9x18 in a NATO 9x19 chamber, and the fatter bullet and case mouth will jam hard.

That said, I'd be concerned about leading, with the .380 boolit nominally .010" undersize for the Makarov bore -- but if it's accurate, it's probably upsetting enough not to lead too much.

Since when was .380 ever a NATO cartridge?

I had envisioned rebarrelling but lost interest.
I didn't drop the hammer on the round.
The extractor didn't engage well enough to extract.
But that of course was the p64. I sold it thinking I'd get a ppk in .380.
Something else I never did.
I suck ;)
