Bought a 788 in .222 after using the .22-250 on pasture poodles last year in S.E. Colorado. I've worked up a few loads for the old Bator design and the Lee copy of the RCBS 55 gr. Could you fellers suggest "fast" cast loads you have had success with using 1-14" twist rifling and the .222? The wind blows like either hard or real hard and I'll be shooting off a padded camera tripod. My shooting pardner is up on the pickup resting on the rack and after 1,400 rounds of .223 and .257 Roberts going off above me last year I'm gonna move away from the truck and park my butt on the ground and use the tripod. This won't be as steady as the hood but my nerves will be in a lot better shape by the end of the trip.

Ok this brings up some questions, are you going to traditional lube or are you going to powder coat, how fast/ what range do you want to shoot.

Did you use cast in the 22-250 last year? Unless the dogs are young and dumb you're handicapping yourself by not using jacketed IMO. That said that 788 will get r done.

Cast also increases the ricochet issues. Never tried cast in 222 but I purchased a hornet for cast and prairie dogs. The hornet only sees 40 V-max now.

I'm using Carnuba Red for lube; using .22 lr for up to 100 yds or so (very accurate Rem 582) and yes, nearly all the dogs we shot last year were young and dumb. I wanted the .222 for from 100 on out to two hundred yards with the cast boolits. The .22-250 is for the very wise full grown dogs who were coming out at 350 and 400 yards. Ricochets are not a problem as we are in a 600 yard wide valley in one location and can see for miles at the other.

I don't know about the 1/14 twist but my 1/12 223 like the newer Lee 58 gr boolit pushed at about 21-2200 fps. Accuracy is pretty steady at that velocity but at lower velocities (17-1900) was inconsistent. Good some days but not others. My 22 Hornet with the same twist likes the older 53 gr Bator but at a more leisurely 1800 fps even though the twist is the same.
