My Remington 700 ADL 3006 is set up for cast boolits w/20" bbl, fresh crown, lt weight poly stock, Lyman 48c and Thompkins globe front site. Real tight chamber from the factory.

I am using a Lee 303B mold sized .311 and it works well with 29 gr IMR4895. But I also have a lot of IMR 4064. Averages about 2 moa, depending on how my day goes, w/the 4895 to 100 yds.

Looking for range of loads using 4064 to give me about 1800 to 1850. I do not have a chronograph. Anyone with experience w/4064 and 185's?

Thanks

Start at 28 gr, use dacron filler and work up to 32 gr. Best accuracy in the 1800 - 1900 fps will come in that load range.

Thanks Larry.

I have never used a filler of any kind. Could I ask why it is important?

Thanks

Filler occupies the space and keeps the powder over the primer significantly improving combustion consistency.
I recently substituted a Lee 155gr PTGC for Lee 200gr RNGC to see if it would still cycle the action of my M1 Garand. It did, except when it didn't. I got several hang fires with weak ejection. Out of eight, one closed the action on a fired case. Cocked the hammer, but didn't eject.
Using a 1/2" ball of Dacron polyfil increases velocity 40-60fps eliminates hang fires and improves accuracy from 6"+ to 1.5" at 50yds.
I was using 35.0gr of H4895.
With the 180 (I have that mold, mine is a mismarked .309". 180gr RNGC. It is marked 184 .314" but casts 180 at .309". I have to beagle mold to get .311"!). I would expect 32-36gr to give what you want with 4064. If using a bolt action, I suggest 20.0gr of #2400. No filler needed.

In a larger case such as the 30-06 each type and burning rate of powder will require a certain load density level and pressure level to ignite and burn efficiently. Also with the slow end of medium burning powders (that's where 4064 is) and slower burning powders a certain weight (mass) of bullet is required for efficient ignition and burning of the powder. With the 185 gr cast bullet w/o a filler you are on the bottom end of ignition and burn efficiency to keep the velocity under 1950 fps for best accuracy.

As mentioned the filler keeps the powder positioned in the bottom of the case against the primer. That alone increases ignition and burn efficiency. Also think of the filler as reducing case capacity. Thus psi and velocity with a given powder charge when a filler is used will increase. How much depends on the type filler material used. I prefer to use Dacron. To maintain a given velocity less powder is needed if a Dacron filler is used.

Using a Dacron filler with 4064 under the 185 gr cast in the '06 will cause the powder to ignite and burn efficiently while keeping the velocity in the range you desire. Accuracy will probably be very acceptable also.

also look for the sticky on the 'proper use of Dacron'.
there is a right way and a wrong way of using it.
used properly and in the correct amount and you will be rewarded [trust me]
use it incorrectly and your not gonna be a happy camper.
knowing what and why is important.

Gentlemen

Thank you VERY much for the advice. Buying Dacron today and reading the sticky.
