View Full Version : I swear, the safe must be shrinking.

I was trying to fit some new acquisitions in the safe the other day, and I realized that fitting something in required something else coming out.

So, I looked at the contents. There is a shelf full of factory ammo. I rarely shoot factory ammo, so that's coming out. I need someplace to put the ammo, I can't just take it out an hang it in the air.

I get to thinking ( yeah, dangerous...), and remember an old wooden box that I made in 7th grade shop class. I go down to the barn, and start rooting around (man, someone needs to organize the barn too...) and actually find it !

192859

Yeah, give me a break. I was, what, 11 when I made it ? And ignore the Little Kings Cream Ale stickers, I didn't start drinking that 'til I was 15.

Man, this box will work. I can fit all that factory ammo in it, and it'll be too heavy for someone to 'run' off with it.
Except :
192860 192861

The thing is full of long-forgotten brass.
About 1500 once-fired Nato stuff, from when my brother visited back in 1993 with a case of it.
100 38 Spl , about 1/2 is wadcutter brass
50 357 Mag.
80 .30-30 once fired
40 .30-06 once fired
a box of nny (!) headstamp 44 Mag, with cardboard separators inside the box and a $17.95 price sticker on it. Gotta be from the late 1980s or early 1990s
192862 192863
maybe 30 12-guage Turkey and slug casings.
and a lonely 45-70 brass case.

So, now I have to find somewhere to put all this brass. And, I can't just put it someplace. I have to decap it all, clean it, length trim, and chamfer.

Every case.

Or I won't be able to sleep.

All this could have been avoided if someone would just make an expandable safe. Like the Doctor Who machine, that is bigger on the inside than it is on the outside.

you could try the Tardis safe company of Galifrei maybe? ...

if you could find the guy that designed my house and shed and have him reverse the way he built it you'd be in business.

Your ammo stockpile is lacking. [smilie=s:

The only ammo I keep in my safe are loaded mags. No sense in having a gun in the safe if you can't quickly grab a full mag if you need it.

And I'm still running out of space and my safe is 26x36x61. The number of guns rating on safes is optimistic at best. I think they assume that the only guns that you own are single shot H&R type rifles and shotguns AND without scopes. I've had to take all of my handguns out of their factory cases and put them in neoprene tablet cases so that they can be stacked closer to each other without damage.

This is what I use to store mine.

Works well, and one can be taken out without the rest falling over.

Twice now I've experienced shrinking safes. The first remedy was another safe twice as big. I can't keep up this solution without removing the bed. It's gonna be inconvenient climbing a ladder to the top of the safes to go to bed at my age.

Your post reminded me of a humor article written by Patric McManus years ago in Outdoor Life. He wrote that it is important to always keep a few empty spots in your gun cabinet, so that your wife will not notice when you bring home another one-- just keep expanding the size of the cabinet (or safe). So, one day is wife says "I must be getting old-- I uswed to be able to dust your gun cabinet in 10 minutes, now it takes me an hour.."

You have room in your gun safe for ammo?
You are deficient.

Ok, using a box you built when you were 11 to stash components you might need some day, why again are you surprised that your safe shrunk? Everyone's safe shrinks. Cool story. Thanks for sharing.

Gun safes will only hold about 1/2 the guns the manufacturer claims they will hold.

Have you considered the rods that Velcro to bottom of top shelf?

I tried the rods. They do give you more room. But the guns are really packed together and removing them w/out damage is a chore. I prefer to have them in gun socks to prevent dings and dents.

My solution was more safe. I'm on my third one. It should get me through a few years before I need another one. I need to build a walk in vault. That's the best solution for my needs but no place to build the vault [emoji853]

Your problem made me laugh.
I have been helping clean out my in-laws house and found a few boxes of ammo. Some 30-40 Krag, 35 Rem, .22 WRF, 35 WCF, 30 WCF and 16 gauge. I told my wife the only logical solution was for me to buy guns I could shoot the ammo in. After a quick look on the net I found that 30-30 and 30 WCF were the same, so that reduced the new gun purchase to only 5. Since I'm not the brightest guy, I blabbed to my wife that I had a 30-30 and wouldn't require all 6 new guns, silly me.
My dinky 28X43X65" safe won't hold 5 more so another safe is in order. Life is tough at times, but you just have to keep on plugging on.
