I assume this is a custom made mould, it is an Ideal block, but it sure looks like an experiment. I was thinking a lightweight plinking boolit for .45-70's but it has provision for gas check...although with my alloy it was a little large. Interesting anyway. Any ideas?

Almost all the mould makers sell Blank blocks finished blocks with no cavity. Another is a lot of hoe machinists start with a worn bad mould in smaller cavity length and rebore or recut.

that's what I was wondering.
I know some of the older colts revolvers would chamber and fire a 456-7 boolit no problem.
their cylinder throats were generous like 455-456 generous with a 454 barrel.

It was more like .464"

That looks like a 452484 in the old cast bullet hand book page 159. Your bullet might have a more pointed nose than the picture in the Hand book of cast bullets.

Hard to say what it was originally intended for but at .464 it certainly would make a nice plinker for TD 45-70s. As cast, TL'd in LLA and loaded over 6.5 - 8.5 gr Bullseye it should be an excellent and very fun load.
