Been looking around for a largest bore wildcat made from .223 that head spaces on the lip.
Anybody use something like that? Maybe an 8mm?

I think that this

Is largest on 223 - I have seen people make a similar
wildcat in 9mm but it was deemed too straight cased
and too many cases split during processing.

I went 300 Whisper due to costs and availability of 30 cal molds and suppressors.

357AR (357Max-rimless) http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?312306-357AR-(Max-Rimless)-from-223-5-56-cases

so custom barrel only and using 357 Maximum dies to load?
No one make completed rifles?

There's a guy that makes a .358 Gremlin that is a 6.5 Grendel necked to .358".

I really want one, but you have to modify the magazines to use them with more than a couple of rounds, due to the width of the bullets.

If someone every finds a case that can be necked to .35 caliber AND FUNCTION IN AN AVAILABLE MAG I intend to have one, but not until then.

Part of me thinks a .35 Remington could be shortened and made to work.

Custom barrel and modified mag. No one makes completed rifles. AR15barrels.com used to list the 357auto, which would only needed reamed deeper. Pmags just need the forward bullet guide removed.

Slightly tapered case for use in a rebored break over or bolt gun could be nice, especially around .32 or so.
.30 would be nice for the available choices of molds. But making full use of available diameter would keep from having to worry about the length from base to shoulder if reboring a used .223.
Maybe something really close to a .351 would be best for a boolit shooter made from .223 brass.
.338 could let a .223 chamber clean up to use a full length case (without too terrible much case length reduction).

Looking at .223 chamber dims...
Maybe could rebore to use the .223 shoulder as the new forcing cone with an 8mm boolit?
That would make for quite a bit of case length reduction though.

Maybe something really close to a .351 would be best for a boolit shooter made from .223 brass.

My dad has an old .351WSL and I tried to turn it into an around-the-house rifle but it's heavy, the trigger is terrible, and you're stuck with open sights.

The cartridge itself, though, makes perfect sense. I think that's part of what makes me want a .35 AR. I want to take .351 ballistics and put it in a practical package.

So maybe rebore a .223 bolt gun or break over to 8mm.
Cut a shoulder (in the chamber) to head space against right where the chamber breaks over into the .223 shoulder angle.
Resize for the new cartridge by not quite totally full resizing the trimmed and formed .223's.
I got to draw sketches to think about this...

It sounds like a neat project. How much does it cost to rebore? I just used a .358" 1:16" blank for the 357AR barrels and was able to thread the muzzles 5/8-24tpi so the muzzle threads weren't so thin. Stepped barrels are easier to turn than a contoured one though.

Did some sketch study...
Looks to me as though a chamber reamer would also be needed (at a minimum).

One of the custom builders had one of these at a gunshow a while back. Wasn't for sale.

Could the .338 Thumper be put on a blow back operated AR for a cast boolit rifle?
Would make it a fun semi-auto alternative to a '92 Winchester.

Actually the 358 ARk is the close equivalent to the 357 Super Mag or Max if you will. It is a good cartridge based on the 7.62x39 in an AR-15, pretty much a 358 Grendel. However the 358 MGP, based on the 6.8 SPC is a better round when used with a modified 6.8 Mag and a regular 6.8 bolt. There are several pictures of the round and guns on Mike Plinkington's web site. You can stretch the loads out a bit with an adjustable gas block, to slow down the AR-15 bolt. If you Google 358 MGP Custom Gun, Mike's web site should come up.

This is one of my two rifles and what the round with a 200gr RCBS PC bullet, plus the modified 10 round mag looks like it basicly duplicates a 358 Win with a 24 inch barrel, based on the Hodgdon Site:

I wouldn't try it - it's designed as a higher pressure cartridge - not like a 45 ACP

If you're after the head and not the case the 22 Nosler is a rebated rim on the 6.8 case that could be taken up to 40 . The 357 Herritt dies work here to make a named cat that escapes me on both the 6.8 and the 22 Nosler they run in 6.8 mags and with a lip tweek will run in 556 mags also .

Loaded down is a given; blow back operated.

This has gotten me thinking more about a small bore blow back operated boolit chunker.
8mm would be really nice. Reckon 9mm could be made to work as a .360 rook rifle.:Bright idea:

I'd like to know where I can find me a 338 thumper reamer. Methinks it's probably proprietary.

FRANKLY, I want to borrow the 50 thumper reamer too, and find out what brass is used as the parent. It's not 50 beowulf. maybe 300 wsm?

----------------

my "design" for the 358 runs the 300 grain bullets from midway (or homecast, whatever) loaded subsonic. Basically a 300 BO with 30% more oomph given the same noise.

Recently got a NOE 360-228fn to try out in a 357AR. Cast a few to try as dummy rounds and see about feeding. Haven't had a chance to cast some up with a harder alloy and test them at the range yet.

I suppose a custom could be made as well, who's to say 50ksi in an AR @ 1050 FPS can't be achieved with a 350 grain bullet? 400 grain bullet? And every jump gives you a better and better BC....

And the 9mm barrel should give you a workable twist rate....

I'm more interested in supersonic hunting bullets even if used with my suppressors. For quiet plinking I have 9x19 uppers (both blowback and gas operated) I've used a .350"/.358" 1:14" GMB blank on the 357AR barrels I made and have been happy with them. http://www.gmriflebarrel.com/rx358-358-caliber-barrel-blank/

.45 is easy!
50 caliber and it starts to split necks.

And here is the .223-45 front loader:
