Discussion thread is here: http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=31129
This group buy is for a Lee 6 cavity mold without handles. The major diameter will be specified at .3215". The heel-based boolit will work best when cast from 30-1 or similar alloy, i.e. soft lead. It is designed to work with a tumble lube such as Liquid Alox.
We have two designs in the running at this time - please see the discussion thread.
The price will be $75 US for shipments to CONUS. That's based on 10 paid molds - which is all we'd better count on. (But if we get extras it will lower the price). Foreign address's will incur extra freight costs - quoted on an individual basis. PayPal will be available for buyers outside the US.
This is another public poll - only vote if you want to buy a mold. Hold off sending funds until we agree on the design - no surprises that way.
I'd like to get this in to Lee by the end of this month - so we don't have to wait for the poll to close if we get agreement. Incidentally, you only get one vote this time.

Welcome to the board. Please read the "feeder thread" (link in first post) to see what we're doing. If this is your first Group Buy here, I'd encourage you to read some of the "Stickies" in the Group Buy sub-forum.
When you're ready to commit, pick a design and cast a vote in the poll. You can get an idea of postage from the USPS website if you're outside the continental US. Please ask any questions before you vote - I check my PM's often, or ask by posting here.
Again - glad you're here. :-D

I haven't voted here because I cast my vote on the earlier thread. I'm just laying back in the weeds waiting to see what the heck we're actually going to do.
I suspect it's a little crowded here in the weeds, but everyone is pretty quiet, so I'm not sure how many others are in this patch.:coffee:

This is the GB thread, Jim needs 10 people to commit to a mould here. Then we send him the dosh and get the order off to Lee.
We seem to have 8 out of 10 moulds asked for with yours C1PNR, the straight sided drawing #1 seems to be the goer. But its Jim's Gb so his call.
So if your in the weeds please come into the sun so we can get this going.
Our Cadets deserve this boolit.

Just voted, confirming my earlier preference. Looks like we've got at least 9 takers. Maybe there are a couple more out there.
I'd like to see 15, but I agree with your earlier plan to get this in to Lee by the end of July, if at all possible.
Do you think we're ready to start collecting payments?

Do you think we're ready to start collecting payments?
Looks like Drawing #1 will be preferred by most and acceptable to the rest.
We're really still 2 molds short, but I'm a believer in Providence.
How about a 10 day window (Last Call) starting tomorrow? I could mail the order to Lee on the 31st. Sorry if that seems like rushing things, but I hate it when these drag out too long. The difference between 15 and 10 moulds is $5 per mold. What the hell ........ :takinWiz:

FIRST & LAST CALL
This buy is closing in 10 days. (We hope!) Buyers funds need to be here by July 30th. The cost will be $75 per mold for shipments into CONUS. The chosen mould will be a heel-base boolit with straight sides as shown in the first drawing. The major diameter of this Lee six cavity mold will be specified at .3215". It will probably take at least 6 months before Lee ships.
Overseas buyers will get their molds via Priority Mail International. The costs are available here: http://www.usps.com/shipping/prioritymail.htm
It's "country specific" so if you prefer send a PM with your address and I'll get a quote from my post office. Remember that the $75 quoted to US buyers includes $10 for Priority Mail, so (for example) if the PO shows $28.75 to your address, the net cost would be $75 plus $18.75 - but I can't tell you a darn thing about customs. They are part of your laws and the USPS won't collect money to pay your customs in advance.
Please PM with any questions (including my address).

OK. A lee 6 cav 32 cal mould is 1.2 pounds. Call it 1.5 to allow for packaging.
USPS First class mail international package for one mould is $13-60. Two moulds would be $20-20.
Priority mail costs double! I for one can wait the extra few days. Other GB`s I have had have only taken 5 or 6 days.

Got no problem shipping First Class - BUT - they don't offer insurance with first class. (At least not in the "Extra Services" listings.) Priority Mail includes $66 insurance.
My Postman suggested "Registered First Class" but I can't see that option anywhere in the International section. The website design is not very intuitive. Anyway, remember that the first $10 of postage is included in the base $75.

Possible Change??
Let me have your opinions on a last minute thought. It struck me that if Lee cuts the cavities a couple of thousandths oversize (as they've been known to do) it will make the boolits damn hard to thumb start into the case. My thought was to put a short bevel on the base of the boolit as an insurance policy. What do you think?
I think I can mark up Bobby's drawing without throwing Lee for a loop, but won't do it without your concurrence. (Tony and I think it's a good idea.)

Your too late. It is already on the drawing which is already in the mail. The heeled base bevel is small ( 0.003" per side) and won't hurt anything ( that is if Lee can make it right).

Sorry Joe. This order closed 8/3/08 when it was mailed to Lee. I don't buy extras - but you can always ask if someone else will give up a mold. If your bore is really .321 then it's not a 32-20, but you might want to double check the bore and/or chamber.
I've got one of those 32-20 marked rifles. Apparently some "ingenious" importer thought he could get a lot more money for these if they were chambered for a cartridge you could buy of the shelf. They are chambered (re-chambered) 32-20 but 32-20 bullets just sorta bounce down the barrel when you shoot 'em

Today I asked Mary at Lee where this order stands. She said that there are 16 orders in front of this one. Patience.
jim4065
02-23-2009, 07:14 AM
I asked Lee again - "there are 11 orders in front of yours".
Let's see - that's an average of 2.5 orders per month.
More patience...........
jim4065
02-24-2009, 01:12 PM
OK - not unlimited patience. I got concerned because a couple of other custom mold orders have been shipped ahead of this one. John Lee called back today. As has been commented on in other threads, I found him to be a gentleman.
He said that although they try to make custom molds in the order they are received, a "couple" of orders got pushed to the front. He's "not going to turn the company upside down" to find out why. He offered to refund the money (several times), but I told him we want the molds - not the money. He said that there are "two 30's and two 32's" in front of us - but the rest of the custom orders are for 1 or 2 molds. He doesn't think it will be "too long". And no, I couldn't get anything more specific. He also said that they have doubled the size of both the plant and their workforce, and still can't keep up with their core business.
I think we can accept this at face value. I know that I've been waiting 2 months for Hornady LnL bushings and they're still backordered - maybe till April.
The nice thing is that the reloading industry is in a boom. It should mean a surge in supply when the demand is finally filled - maybe lower prices? :bigsmyl2:

They're Here!
A visit from UPS turned out to be these 12 molds. Gotta work tonight - but did have time to open a random box, clean up the mold (of course) and cast a few out of 50/50 ww/linotype mix. Actually, I'm going to shoot ww's in this rifle, but all I had in the hot pot was this stuff, so what the hell?
The heel measures .307 to .308", and the major diameter is running .323 to .324". Seems a skosh large, but maybe the pure ww's will shrink a bit - also, as I've mentioned before, mics intimidate me. Can't seem to get the same answer twice in a row. The old Lyman scale says 117 grains, which is a bit light, but should improve with straight ww's.
Haven't lubed any yet, but the bevel on the heel lets 'em thumb press into some once fired "Super" brass and into some modified w-w 32-20 brass.
All in all - I'd say they're keepers. I'll try to get 'em shipped out tomorrow.
