I should know this after decades of casting but never ran across the issue before, guy at the range about 10 years ago gave me a dozen sticks of "tin", finally got around to looking at it, sticks are about a foot long and about a pound each, (8) are marked "Taramet 50% Tin", the other (4) are marked "Federated Cast-Omatic Solder 50/50", I am assuming the "other" 50% is lead, correct?

I have also heard that solder is impregnated with an acid to help with the soldering process and so not good for making bullets, old wives tale or true?

TIA

Yes - 50 / 50 Lead / Tin

No acid in bar solder that I'm aware of .....

Acid core flux solder is on a roll, smelly PITA to melt down.

dsh1106 told you right. Acid core solder is round, comes on a roll and is usually marked as such on the roll. Your friend at the range gave you about $300 worth of solder. Quite a friend I would say!

Did not know him actually, I think we were making small talk during a cease-fire and next time I saw him he had bought it with him, nice of him, but $300 for 6lbs each of tin and lead?

Yeah, bar solder is expensive. $300 is probably high but I've seen it offered from $10 to nearly $30 a stick. The fellow did you right.

That is body solder for leading a car body. No flux. I have about 50# of it. Cost me $5.
I used to use it in a body shop.

Thanks, might be better to look elsewhere for a source of tin for the boolit casting, I only need very little, just cast for pistols and BPCR's,
