Friend has two rifles he wants to sell.
Both used for hunting. Many dings in stock. Finish worn, but no rust.
1) Remington 742 Carbine. 18" barrel. 308.
2) Sako Finnbear. 21" barrel. 270.
Both shoot well.
I was thinking
1) $450
2) $1200
Comments????

Your 742 Woodsmaster Carbine in 308 (had one and it was a fantastic rifle) is going for $250-300 over this way. I saw one in 30-06 for that price without a scope but in good shape just a little bit ago.

The other I have no idea but off the top of my head a used hunting rifle in the common 270 especially if slightly rusted and dinged from use will go nowhere near $1200 considering the prices out there now. Less than half that would be my guess

The Remington around $350
the Sako $700 to $1000. Although 21" barrel sounds wrong.

Remington 742 parts are hard to come by, if needed. It was replaced by the 7400 in 1981.

Well being that he is in Hawaii there must be a upcharge.

the bad reputation of the 742, keeps the prices low.
I had a minty carbine in 308, looked new, unfired. Two years ago, right be fore my auction, I sold it for $400.

The 742 is a decent hunting rifle however the chamber has a habit of rusting as it is more difficult to clean than most. Also the receiver suffers from damage from the bolt when full power loads are shot in them. If this is a rifle that gets sighted in with a few rounds and maybe a deer or 2 every year it should last, as a range gun it will quickly deteriorate, this is why the prices for them are low.

Measured it with a tape measure.
Barrel doesn't look like it was cut, but I don't know.

Year is not that important. The model is. Finnbear covers several models including the L 61 R, 75? and 85.

It's marked L61R.
After looking closer at the muzzle, it looks like it was cut and recrowned.

Dang. Most accurate rifle out of the box I ever owned was one. Got it from my grandfather when he died and with the 4x Redfield on tip off mounts it would send 110gr Silvertips into a quarter at 100yrds. At a time when sub moa rifles cost some money this was astounding.

Yes it should be 23.5" or the metric equivalent. Unless it's plain doggy; that Sako should fetch $700-$900 easily. And worth it. Best, Thomas.

In my area New England many shops will not buy a Rem semi-auto rifle. They have a limited life span around 500 rounds. Most hunters will NEVER hit that amount a shooter will.

My shop a good looking one was limited to $100 bucks no more to buy as we had to guarantee it to work for a year or so.

The Sako is a nice gun but barrel cut and re-crowned about the same. Why did it need work?

You will make out better with a private sale or if you have an auctioneer in your area that sells guns let him do it.

Only the ones with a bid are worth looking at.
