I'm pondering the Ranch Dog .225-50 tumble luber in a 4 cavity, and I'm debating all four of one base style, or 2 GC/2PB. Don't really intend to hot rod it too much as I have jacketed for that. Mainly thinking of it as a subsonic option, but might want to rev it up a little occasionally.

At .22LR speeds, do you foresee any issues running GC bullets with the GC's left off? Tell me of your experiences.

isn't going to hurt a thing but id bet a buck that you get better accuracy with a check. Never seen a gas checked design shoot exceptional well with the check left off

In the 22 Hornet, the 225438 (45 grs.) without the gas check shot really well at 1,200 f.p.s. Groups @ 50 ran around 3/4".

What cartridge will you be using?

My "gallery" loads for the .223 uses a Lyman 225462 without the gas check . Cast at about eight or nine BHN and enough 700X to make fifteen hundred feet per second , it shoots as well as the 22LR at the same distances .

I think they actually perform a little better than the plain base designs as long as you have good fill out on the base band . But , like any of them , as long as you are brutal inspecting the bullets either will do fine .

That is indeed the accepted conventional wisdom, but I got to scratching my head:

The heel-base of a .22LR is essentially a gas check bullet without a gas check, and there's no denying those can't be made to shoot extremely well - at least to 1,050 fps or so anyway.

I have shot the 225438 in a plain based version in my Hornet over 3.5 grains of Unique and a small pistol primer for velocities running about 1800 FPS with good accuracy up to 100 yards. From my testing with subsonic loads, accuracy up to 50 yards is improved at even lower velocities. Just a matter of finding the "sweet spot" in the velocity range./beagle
