OK I don't want hot loads
What I want is a wimp load to play with out of my Ruger Blackhawlk

What I need is someone with one of the computer programs to figure me out a load

.310 cast bullet
120 Gr plain base
BLUEDOT powder
And about 800-900 FPS LOL even 600 FPS would do what I want

I have 7+ lb of bluedot that is left over from shotgun shell reloading
So I figure loading the 30 carbine would SLOWLY

Use some of it up LOL
I figure I might even try the load out on a groundhog or 2 along the dike at the marsh

Thanks
John

I'm not sure you'll get there with Blue Dot. It's a pretty slow powder to push a light pill that slow.

I use 3.5 to 4.0 gr of Reddot in my 30 M1 BH with 93, 100, 120. which yields velocities in the range you mentioned.

An older Alliant manual is showing 5.1 gr Bluedot in a 32 H&R Mag 98 gr LRN at 1,190 fps and 7.3 grs in a 38 SPL 125 gr at 1,035 fps.

See this article by Beagle. There is some Blue Dot information in the tables. The loads are just a bit faster than what you are looking for, but not real hot either.

I reload and here are the ingredients to my secret recipe for a proper .30 Carbine pistol round:

14-15 gr of Hodgdon H110
CCI small mag (http://rover.ebay.com/rover/13/0/19/DealFrame/DealFrame.cmp?bm=603&BEFID=96424&acode=616&code=616&aon=&crawler_id=523588&dealId=jqM4TqIDsI5uyIux1BOslw%3D%3D&searchID=&url=http%3A%2F%2Fads.midwayusa.com%2Fproduct%2F283 276%2Fcz-magazine-scorpion-evo-3-s1-9mm-luger-30-round-polymer-translucent%3Fcm_mmc%3Dpf_ci_ebay-_-Gunsmithing%2B-%2BMagazines%2B-%2BPistol%2B-%2B11%252B%2BRounds-_-CZ-_-283276%26sdc_id%3DeBay&DealName=CZ%20Magazine%20Scorpion%20EVO%203%20S1%2 09mm%20Luger%2030-Round%20Polymer%20Translucent&MerchantID=523588&HasLink=yes&category=0&AR=-1&NG=1&GR=1&ND=1&PN=1&RR=-1&ST=&MN=msnFeed&FPT=SDCF&NDS=1&NMS=1&NDP=1&MRS=&PD=0&brnId=2455&lnkId=8070676&Issdt=170204051936&IsFtr=0&IsSmart=0&dlprc=19.99&SKU=283276). rifle primers
115 gr hard cast (BHN 22), gas checked bullets (http://www.brownells.com/search/index.htm?k=bullets) or 110 gr Berry's plated bullets (http://www.brownells.com/search/index.htm?k=bullets)
Starline brass

Well, according to Alliant, 8.5 gr of Blue Dot will give you 1258 fps in 9mm with a 115 gr Speer GDHP, so I would use that as a base point and work backwards until you get the speed you want. Do you have a chrono?

Since the 9mm has less case capacity than the .30 carbine, the pressure even if you use the same charge weight.

For what it's worth, Lyman 46th Edition has their 120gr #311359 listed using 6.8gr (1066fps) to 8.8gr (1339fps) of Blue Dot and a small rifle primer.
Test firearm was a 7 1/2" Blackhawk.

If you trust a simple multiplyer to arrive at a reduced load.

I've been loading light loads for Ruger 30C for over 40 years, faster powders will get you what you want. Blue dot becomes difficult to down load. AA5/231/HP38/WST I have used.

Which is in line with my estimate from using 9mm load data. :)

For anyone that is curious, the algorithm that is used on that page is basically:

EstimatedPowderCharge = InitialPowderCharge * (DesiredVelocity / InitialVelocity)^1.25

I agree Blue Dot is too slow a powder for a 120gr plain base cast boolit. Wincheater 231 or Unique would do well which you can get loads for out of the Lyman 44 handbook on this site at the bottom. I have loaded the 30 carbine for many years. The case length is utmost important. A lot of new brass is too short which means the case will not be far enough back in the cylinder for the firing pin to reach the primer. Conversly if the case it too long it will stop the cylinder from turning. Fot ny 30 carbine Ruger Blackhawk I know the required brass length and check eash case once sized and trim as necessary. Trim down a long sized case until it clears the fram when rotating the cylinder. Record the length and your set.

ReloaderEd, have you tried Starline brass. They just started offering .30 Carbine brass and Starline is a stickler for adhering to the SAAMI specs.

Boys, boys, boys............... You tend to fall into the .30 M1 Carbine mindset. If you check the Lyman manuals for years, Lyman developed loads that would function the .30 M1 Carbine. When the .30 Ruger came out, they listed them as pistol loads and simply regurgitated the data they had developed for the .30 M1 Carbine. The Blackhawk is a pistol and has no pressure threshold for functioning as does the rifle.

Get your manual out, turn to the .38 Special data, do a little interpolation and pick out loads that are powder puffs and have at it.

Blue Dot is not my choice for pistols as it tends to be temperature sensitive in cold weather but if you have a bunch, use it. I've shot loads of it at around the 1200 FPS range and if that's too fast, throttle it back some, you don't have to have the pressure to function the rifle./beagle

like Beagle I'd have no problem backing off on the blue-dot.
try 6 grs, heck try a small pistol primer.
blue-dot will burn at 10-12K no problem.
