Folks,

I know that there is no single book that'll tell me all I need to know about casting. BUT, is there one that comes close?

I'm a newbie to the field and will not consider lighting the smelting fire until I'm comfortable that I know what I need to know.

What are your recommendations?

First, welcome to the forum!

The Lyman Reloading Manual. I recently bought the 48th edition, and it has what you need, plus loading data for both cast and jacketed bullets.

You will find as you get sucked into this addiction that you will want to own a lot of reading/research information, but this is a good place to start.

Welcome to the addiction!! I would recommend Lyman's Cast Bullet Handbook Third Edition. I am sure that others with more knowledge than me will chime in soon and make some recomendations. Take care.

Thanks 454PB. You know, I might already have that one. :) I'll have to double-check.

Just the thought of making my own lead projectiles is incredibly exiting. :)

In addition to the Lyman cast bullet handbook, I thought the Lee Modern Reloading book had some pretty good info on cast in it. I have learned more from lurking here and searching the old posts than anything though. Good luck with your new hobby!

Hi, An excellent and very comprehensive compendium of information was put together some years ago under the title, "The Art Of bullet Casting" and it was published by The Wolfe Publishing Company out of Arizona. I believe that it is still available. (current price unknown). In the text are classic articles written by well known legends in the cast boolit world starting with the very basics of casting and including writeups on specific calibers, problems & solutions, experiments and investigations into variables and work with various cast boolit types. It is one of the best texts I have run across. A second classic is the NRA's publication on Handloading which also begins with the basics and covers all phases of casting and loading your own. It includes the monumental investigative works of Col Harrrison in the realm of 30 caliber cast bullets. Last and certainly not least is the book by Phil Sharpe; I don't recall the exact wording of the title, but it, as best as I can recall is, The Principles & Practices of Reloading Metallic Ammunition. It was written a long time ago, but contains vast quantities of important information. LLS

The Second Edition of the book "CAST BULLETS FOR BEGINNER AND EXPERT" is complete.
This has gone from under 100 to 496 pages produced by well over 140 contributors, and is a non-profit enterprise.
Any excess of money is going, ($400 to date), to Rudi Prusok and the ASSRA archives, a wonderful resource for gun info.

A WORD copy with all EXCEL workbooks and ERRATA is available at no charge on http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/CB-BOOK/, in FILES. FREE!!!!!

WORD and Adobe Acrobat .pdf copies of the book, with EXCEL workbooks and ERRATA on a CD are available delivered to any country for $5. Everything in the print copy is in the CD, BUT!! the CD has a lot of material that is not in the print copy of the book. I recommend getting the CD if you get the print copy.

Print copies are available at $27, delivered in the USA. Copies to countries outside the USA, including Canada, are $37.50-it's the postage cost!

Thanks to Joe's efforts this is a remarkable resource of information spanning more years than I care to remember. Many pages contain information gathered from our distinguished Cast Boolits members too.

Joe has graciously allowed his book's chapters to be posted in one of my favorite websites; LASC.us, home of the Los Angeles Silhouette Club, another excellent resource for cast boolit shooters.

Another excellent resource for me has been the Wolfe Publishing Company Art of Bullet Casting Collection on DVD. This is a collection of articles taken from the pages of Handloader and Rifle magazines over; once again, more years than I care to remember. This DVD is sold from their website and available at MidwayUSA too. Cost - about $25.00.

There's enough information in these three resources plus the two Lyman books to satisfy the information needs of cast boolit shooters from showing beginners how... to explaining why things do or don't do what we expect them to do.

I have this as well, and it's extremely useful.

But, Uncle Chan, all in all, THE most useful info you'll find is ultimately right here on this forum.

It's fast, it's verified, and the advice/information you get comes from actual experience ranging from forty or more years ago to just forty or less minutes ago.

I believe you can never have too much reference and information.

OPEN MOUTH INSERT FOOT :killingpc SORRY NO OFFENCE MENT!!

My copy, I guess was first ed and sort of short. However I have taken time to read your post and see its 5X longer now!

THEREFOR (LIKE A COMPLEETE IDIOT) I SPOKE WITHOUT -ANY- KNOWLAGE OF THIS NEW BOOK!!

Just the fact that there is a 2nd edd with 500 pages answers the only concern I ever had with it! Length.
What was there was GOOD.
I am glad to see a 2nd edd as I am kinda slow on the pick up sometimes and need it drilled in to my tiny mind I guess!
If I ever had the courage to write a book, it would be marketed as a campfire starter, or toilet paper at best.
This place is great, but sometimes between thought to read post, the real thought just does not make it through! UGH!
I DO MOST HONESTLY APOLIGISE WITH ALL MY HEART!..........Buck
