I was recently given 6# of IMR 4198 and 4# of IMR 4895. These were in factory sealed 1# metal cans. I opened one of the cans of 4198 and took a sniff. It has a somewhat pungent odor. It smells a little bit like compound W. I am afraid it has turned. Any thoughts?

pour some out and take a look, better yet pour out each can individually , and look for rust or deterioration.
snort(from a distance ) some of your other powders....they all smell diff, but not acidic/coarse.

if the can rusted there is a recovery plan. if the powder is bad, use it for fertilizer.

if all else fails give it to me, and i'll get you into the aug gun show for free....

I had several cans of various powder go bad here in hot, humid Louisiana. They all smelled somewhat like urine.

4198 has a solvent kinda smell as does 4895 but it isn't quite as strong
lok for the reddish rust color of dust, and you can see fumes rise out of the cans if it has turned.

I am currently shooting on a can of 4895 that is older than I am, which would put it 40 years old or older. It was part of my father's msc collection of powders he never used, so I started using it for my 30-30.

If powders are kept at a normal room temps, (40-80 deg F) they almost never go bad, as long as the container doesn't rust away or the draw moisture.

Best Wishes from the Boer Ranch,

Joe

If it dosen't look rusty red or clumped together I would not be afraid to use it. Do start with the lowest starting loads until you are comfortable with it's performance. DALE
