2004 F150 XLT 4wd with the 5.4 engine. Bought used after my daughter totaled my Tundra. I've done a timing job, replaced a bent rod, put in 2 power steering pumps, a steering shaft and today I replaced the rear bearings and axle seals.

I wish I had my Tundra back and if they were not so expensive I'd buy another one.

I am kind of like rancher, though I own and drive fords mostly. I do have a 98 dodge diesel (last year of the 12 vavle non computeried) I do have a computerized ford diesel that is alright, but it is an older 7.3.
I gave a 95 chevy away last year, high mileage, but still very dependable and getting more miles daily.
I do still own one 86 chevy with a service bed, but it is basically a yard truck and probably averaged less than 100 miles a year since I have owned it.

2002 Dodge Ram 2500 24valve Cummins Turbo Diesel 2wd pure darned hot rod!!!!! 500 HP for now, but more to come! (I only drive it when it's not raining, lol) Daily driver is a 99 Dodge Ram 3500 4x4 24 valve Cummins Turbo Diesel with 5 speed transmission, a few extra goodies on it also! Both are really good trucks! 21mpg on hot rod truck,(if you keep your foot light on the smoke pedal!!) 4x4 is 16 mpg at best. They didn't cost much, for the dually truck that is, the hotrod has enough cash sunk in it to buy a REALLY nice sports car!! But, they are both paid for. I can't buy comparable trucks for half of what I have in both trucks, and like was previously stated, I CAN work on them both! In fact, I built the engine in the hotrod truck myself!!! Just my story. Got Diesel?

:D 1984 F150 300ci I6.C6 automatic.DD.Only time it did`nt start,the battery had croaked.North of 400k miles.Can do just about any maint it needs myself.
The one upgrade that I have done to it,was to get rid of the electronic feed back carb and replace the tfi ign system with the DS11 ign system. That was an easy swap as it is a simple PNP job.Milage went from 8mpg hiway to 16 mpg hiway.Cost of swap maybe 90 minutes.Had to go to a friends house to borrow hie timing light.Mine had grown legs and walked off.All parts needed were given to me free.
Good luck.Have fun.Be safe.

2001 F-150 2wd 5.4 Triton V8 with the rare 54Boss package(one of those aftermarket add on companies like the old van conversion places). Basically added power everything, limited slip rear, tuner chip to the computer, fancy decals, and remote start/alarm function that I hate because it is flaky. Fun to drive, hard to keep back tires on it!

2000 Chevy 1500 , have owned it longer than any truck I have ever owned, and spent the most on it too . In the past I have always driven fords since I was in high School, and my next one will either be a ford or a newer Dodge. I have only been with with out a Pickup once when I got a wild hair and bought a Monte Carlo, that was a mistake, you never realize just how handy a truck is till you dont have one , never again. course that was when I first got married too and we were a single car family at that time. Driver33,

It is my sincere belief that the 6.9 IDI & equipped with a 4 or 5 speed manual transmission is the TOUGHEST diesel PU ever made. = One of our club members from Goliad County, TX has over 600,000 trouble-free miles on his 1984 F-250 & plans to continue driving it for the remainder of his "motoring life".
(He told me at a local "diesel-head get-together" in October 2016 that he "long ago lost count of" how many batteries, sets of tires, belts, etc. that he has replaced when they wore-out.)

2005 GMC Canyon Z71 SLE. Worked well for years because I had a GMC Savanna 2500 as well. No longer have a full size van so I need a truck that's 4' between the wheel wells. The price of pickups is ridiculous anymore. Especially when I would put maybe 5,000 miles on it a year. Can't justify the cost. I'm keeping my eye open for the right truck w/ a price around $12,500. High mileage doesn't scare me. It's rust that does.

Menner,

Add a TURBO. better exhaust & the 6.9 will not only be bullet-proof but POWERFUL enough for most any task.

Fwiw, my 7.3 IDI with ZF will cruise all day at 75-80MPH in the South TX Summers & never even "get warm".
(Btw, I "got caught" with over 3 TONS of lead on my PU by a WV "License & Weight" Trooper & would have gotten a ticket, had she NOT seen the "thin blue line" on the rear of the truck & inquired about it.)
Btw, I've never (until then) wanted to hug a State Trooper BUT that was one GOOD-LOOKING redhead, who filled-out the uniform WELL!!!

2004.5 HO 24 Valve Cummins, 6 speed, 4X, exhaust brake and Horn, 180K.

Best truck so far except the $100 Aluminum Crimped to Plastic Radiator on a $10,000 engine LOL. Spent last Saturday pulling the intercooler to get to it. I passed on the $100 radiator and got the $160 Premium one. LOL There was an all aluminum TIG welded one available for $800 that should have gone in when the truck was built.

I HAD an '85 6.9 IDI. Heads at 160K. Injector pumps ALL THE TIME. I carried a spare and have changed them on the side of the freeway. It cured me of IH engines.

Still have an '52 Powerwagon and a '73 F262

Just saw this poll and had to vote. I've got a 2013 Toyota Tundra. Looking back I almost wish I had sprung the extra bucks for a Tacoma. I got a deal I couldn't pass up on the Tundra. It is a basic crew cab with a long bed. When I got home with it I found that it wouldn't fit my garage. It was so comfortable(the reason I didn't go for the Tacoma) that I accepted that inconvenience. With my size and age, I didn't want to have to shoe horn myself into the driver's seat.

2014 F-250 4X4, 6.2L gas engine. I've had good luck with F-series trucks, likely because I 1) take car of them and 2) seldom keep them past 4 to 4-1/2 years. None too impressed with newer Fords and their recycled-beer-can body metal fetish, but not the first time that Ford has done weird stuff with their truck line.

Best tip for these engines is don't wait for 100,000 miles to change the plugs do it at 50K and if you have a few extra bucks replace the coils at the same time, I do the oil changes at 3,000 miles.

Best pickup I ever owned was my grandpa's 1966 F100 2wd with the 352 V8 and 4spd. He bought it brand new and I bought it for $100 in 1989 with 70k miles on it. Sold it in Iowa in 1998 and regretted it ever since.

Speaking of grandfather's trucks...

This is a 1959 F-100 that was purchased new by my mother's father. When he died in 1983 my father and I drove it from CA to NY. It was driven very little from the 1980's until my mother gave it to me two years ago.

I haven't had the time to get it going and it is sitting in my barn. The body is in pretty good shape for being in NY for a few decades. I expect the motor to be fine after I get the carburetor and ignition system replaced. The plan is that my youngest son will be driving it. I have a few years as he is only 10.

2007 F150 Crew cab 5.4 Triton 4WD 3.73-1 posi. 6.5'bed, this is the engine that blows out or seizes the spark plugs.

Best tip for these engines is don't wait for 100,000 miles to change the plugs do it at 50K and if you have a few extra bucks replace the coils at the same time, I do the oil changes at 3,000 miles.

What my mechanic explained was... time the changing of the spark plugs to be within your covered warranty and service package.. and when they pull the threads out.. they can replace them. :)

Bob in St. Louis

From what I've heard about the Triton spark plug thing is that "Autolite" is the only company that makes one piece spark plugs. All other have two piece (for the Triton engine). When you attempt to take them out, that bottom half falls into the cylinder. So the Autolite would be less likely to do that. Not that I'm generally a big fan of that brand plug, but if it avoids all that, then it's worth it.

Few and far between.
My neighbor "put me to task" to find a full size Chevy 4x4 with A/C an 8' bed, and regular cab.
I told him, "No problem, what color, they're everywhere"?
Turns out, there was ONE is St. Louis at the time, and it had major hail damage. That's the one he ended up buying. But I was surprised there was only one is STL.

Let me know what you're looking for & I'll let you know when I find one.

Yea.... It's on my bucket list to get something "vintage".
I'm in the auto industry, and frankly, I'm so tired of technology on cars nowadays, I told my wife that my next "new" car will be older than I am.
My dream car is a '66 Catalina. Slightly modernised, but not in the electronics department.
I'll put word out when that day comes.

Bob in St Louis,

Fwiw, I'm trying to "buy back" the custom built 1976 AMC Matador SST coupe that my ex "traded off" shortly before we got a divorce in 1979.- I know who has it & hope one day to buy it from his estate administrator.
(The current owner has been in a nursing home for 5-6 years & won't even consider selling it. = It's just sitting inside the barn, under a car cover, on his farm near Naples, TX.)

The coupe has only 82,000 original miles & was running fine when it was parked.

Bob in St Louis,

VERY TRUE.
I was the person who had it custom-built by the AMC factory, with the genuine rosewood & leather interior & all the other "stuff" that was "special ordered". - I waited nearly 8 months for AMC's custom shop to "get around to building it".
My "soon to be ex" traded it off because she knew that I wanted to keep it; she traded it off while I was out-of-state on TDY.

By the time that I got back to TX, the Matador had been sold & the dealer couldn't find (or didn't want to be bothered with looking for) the buyer's correct name/address. It was traded-in to a HUGE (and really "impersonal") Cadillac/Oldsmobile/GMC truck dealer in Dallas.
(I found it again by accident about 6 months later but the "new owner" wouldn't re-sell it.)

+1 I've been a Toyota owner since '96 when we bought an Avalon. Kept it 10 years and bought another one in '06. Bought the '13 Tundra as a second vehicle and it has fulfilled that role very well. Just bought a '17 Avalon Limited for what may be our last car. I value reliability over a lot of other things that prompt people to choose a particular car.

I have to admit that, in buying the Limited, I violated my "keep it simple" principle. If we keep it 10 years, there will still be features on it that I haven't learned to use.

Considering Toyota Tundra is tied with Ford at 96-98% American made, it doesn't surprise me one bit.
If I wasn't about to buy a 5th wheel toy hauler I would've gone with a Tundra.

I bought the wife a Limited 4Runner 4x4. 4.7L V8 full-time 4x4 and everything else available in 2004. It now has 145,000 on it and other than tires, brakes, oil, and filters it has needed nothing else. Non of the power switches have faltered in any way.
It's been the most reliable vehicle I've owned to date. My 99 Dodge was a close second but I had to have a lifter pump replaced, front end rebuilt, and a window motor replaced.

I get that. I did quite a bit of research on what is currently the most reliable truck. And the answer is? Depends on who you ask. :D However, it would appear that Chevy currently comes out on top in many of the sources.

My truck is an '09 F-150. 5.4L 3V engine. It turned 200,000 miles on Wednesday of this week. Much like your 4Runner, it has only had wear/maintenance items replaced. Nothing else, not even the belts or hoses. It runs and drives pretty much like new.

Almost without exception, everyone makes a good/great pickup now. At one time Toyota certainly had much better reliability than the American counterparts, but that is no longer true.

Jeff I agree with you on American made vehicles vast improvements.

I did just read an article though of the 8 worst lemons on the road. GM had no. 1,2,and 3(Silverado). Ford had 4 and 5 and Chrysler/Jeep took the last 3 places.

Everyone can point out that one car they've or someone they know have owned that was super reliable but as a whole Honda and Toyota have been in the top spots for decades.

For the amount most people seem to need trucks, they'd be better of buying a nice car and an old beat up pickup. Many people with the nice pickups cannot even lay a sheet of plywood in the bed.

I'm on my third Tacoma 4x4. These dudes are tough little trucks and I have had no problems of any kind with any of them. The dealership keeps sending me notices that they want to buy my truck, then I go down and haggle with them until I feel good about the price. The thing is, they really hold their value. I put 50-60K on them and get a new one for 10K or so with trade in.

First I've heard about that. No matter. The way I use a PU and this will be the last one for me(barring a severe wreck), I doubt that any kind of frame issue will ever surface. This 2013 Tundra has hardly any electronics other than the radio, which is rarely used and the computer which controls engine function. It has the smoothest automatic transmission that I have ever experienced. Gas mileage is not the greatest but I only have approx. 22k miles after 3½ years. At 74, each year has fewer miles driven on both vehicles.

Some years ago I worked at a Toyota dealership as a body mechanic. I got to drive em all and my favorite in the Toyota line was the Tacoma, it felt like a truck and was good as any mid size pick up made. The Tundra on the other hand just didn't have the truck feel, I was always looking for low tires or weak suspension. They just drove too nice, more like an SUV than a truck, (driving my '69 GMC 3/4 ton daily may have had something to do with that opinion I'll admit).

Then there was my favorite customers, a pair of deputies assigned to the district attorney's office. They used their issue 4-Runner as a ram on a few occasions, (maybe 3-4 times a year, we were on a first name basis after the first couple visits).

In regards to reliability, when I was looking to buy a new pickup a couple of years ago, I was surprised that the Ram 1500 finished reasonably well. I've had horrible experiences with Dodge products, including a 2001 Ram 1500.

From what I was able to discern, reliability in the Ram series is highly dependent on how loaded the pickup is. Low optioned trucks like mine with only power windows and such are far higher rated than the ones with all of the fancy stuff like nav systems, heated seats, etc.

I know mine has been great, but it's only got 31k miles on it. When it gets north of 100k with no issues, then I'll be happy.
