Has anyone encountered Titegroup being position sensitivein relation to muzzle velocity?
I thought that I would see an increase in muzzle velocitygoing from a 158 grain bullet to a 125 grain bullet with the same powdercharge. Has anyone encountered this??

I have clocked it at about the same but with 4grns tight group.

And the same again on my colt.

Two soultions.

You can put filling to trap the powder to the back of the case.

Or ingore it and shoot the hell out of em.

One is good for accuracy the other is good for plinking.

I ran a similar test with 231 and Unique several years ago with even more extreme results, although I used the 45 Colt as the test vehicle.

In my experience though, Tightgroup is probably the least position sensitive of the pistol powders in large cases with small charges of powder. I use it in the 45/70 and 405 grain cast bullets to duplicate the old 45/405/55 cavalry load with near black powder consistency (Sds under 10).

Both bullets are a bit to a lot more shallow seated than standard 158 SWC's which increases the extreme spreads from powder position variations....more room to shift around.

I am afraid that velocity variations will be high under such conditions with 125s no matter what. No velocity increase with 125s over 158s because shallower seating lowers pressure and velocity with light bullet. This is commonly seen.

Try a dewc seated flush.

With the same powder charge the heavier bullet will usually have a higher velocity. The reason is the the larger bullet takes up more case capacity and this raises the pressure inside the case.

A lighter bullet would be going faster if the pressure was the same however the reduced air space inside the case has a larger effect than on velocity than the actual weight of the bullet.

The large variations in velocity between nose up and nose down is normal but those are some wild spreads.

I learn something new every single day here. Really glad I found this place.

I have a 38 Special load with Titegroup that is inconsistent in velocity, report and recoil. 3.5 gr and 138 gr RN bullet @ .358. It can be accurate but the inconsistent report and recoil bother me. No more TG, I have consistent results with 231 and WST. YMMV

I just posted some data on the "Concerns with Titegroup" thread. See post 17 at
