Currently old school with gun type&ser# on a legal pad but have been looking for an app or a traditional software program to organize better.
I see there are quite a few programs available so would enjoy hearing opinions and/or tips on what you use to keep track of your stuff.
Thanks

I use an App call I-Own (for the I-phone/ I-Pad). I've had it for a while, use it for stuff around the house, Landscaping equipment and yes, my firearms.

I have tried some of the phone apps and computer software programs but found they were time intensive. I still prefer to keep digital records and use an excel spreadsheet and a powerpoint which I update when needed. These are stored in multiple locations and I also make a video on occasion for insurance purposes.

but if you keep records then your wife will know how many guns you have and you can't pull the "its been in the safe" when she spots a new gun.

I don't have a really extensive collection so I keep digital photos of each gun with specific info (mfg, model, s/n, special features, etc.) overwritten onto the pics. Pics are transferred to CDs; one set kept in my #1 safe with family documents and a second set kept in our bank safety deposit box. Required a little time to get it set up but easy to maintain and keeps my insurance agent happy (without providing him the hard-copy list he originally wanted).

With today's technology, if the internet is accessible from your computer, your computer is accessible through the internet. With that in mind, I wouldn't be inclined to store an inventory of my firearms on my computer.

I wouldn't put it past some of the liberal extremist, seditious, elitists, like Kamala Harris, Polosi, Finkelstein and others to contract hackers to infiltrate pro-second amendment websites and hack into member computers. A little paranoid? You have to understand, I live in Kali. I'm behind enemy lines.

I use the "Newfie" method when I count my guns ... "One gun, two guns, three guns, nother gun, nother gun, nother gun ..."

I do keep a running Excel inventory on my guns and edit it from time to time. I list what the gun is, when I bought it, and what I feel it's honest market value is regardless of what I paid for it. It's more for my wife's benefit really. You know what they say: "My biggest fear is that if I die my wife will sell my stuff for what I told her I paid for it ..."

Here are some more links to learn more about the Precision Firearm Records Software.

The software only appears to be sophisticated but is really quite simple to use.
All you need is one or more firearms, a digital camera and you are in business.

A no cost upgrade will soon be ready that will significantly enhance the firearm vital statistics portion of the software

Absolutely correct. Musclecars are even harder to hide. Thank God Dad has a big barn up at his place.

I just make an old fashioned list. I list make, model, caliber, scope, or any special accessories. On the items that I have inherited I make another line item describing who owned it and any interesting story associated with it. This is more for the next generation. I update it regularly. I usually spend part of New Years day going through the safe. I'll check each gun for rust or safe rash and wipe it down with an oily cloth.

I'm not big on conspiracies, but we all know computers can be hacked.

I made up my own form with the info on it that I wanted - Make, Model, Caliber, Barrel Length, Serial Number, etc. along with Date of Purchase, Where Purchased, Price Paid and a section for Notes to list anything unusual, the history of the firearm if I know it, anything that might help to identify it. I also take digital photos or the firearm - over all, close ups, serial number, any thing that may help to identify it such as a scratch, dent, whatever. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words.

I keep them on file in my computer as well as print them out and put them in a three ring binder. If I happen to sell or trade one, I make a note on the information sheet as to the date and to whom it was sold/traded.

Pretty low tech but it works and if something happens to me, my wife has something to work from as far as liquidating them and knowing values, etc. We don't have kids but I do want some of them to go to special friends and that is also noted on the information sheets as well as a list put in with my Will.

I'm amazed that no one has mentioned our very own program, created by Wiljen, Reloaders Reference. This is an amazing program that is both a database of many things, reloading components, firearms, etc but also will print targets, do various calculations an can even include most reloading manuals! And it is free!
Get it here:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/reloadersrfrnce/

I use it to store an inventory of firearms with pictures and for many other uses as well.

Word doc. Every gun I have ever owned, even if I sold it is on that list. It's simple and plain, but it works.
