Its a voluntary thing , you get more privileges if you subscribe to it , I didnt for a while , this is a great site for information

Exactly. Membership is free, but there are different levels. Just being a non-paying member doesn't preclude you from having all the benefits. With enough time and posts, you can post in Swapping and Selling. You can buy at any time.
