I got this cannon a few years ago. It is a replica, barrel and carriage. Close as I can
date it is 1950s. Barrel is brass, bore is mirror, has never been fired. From looking
on line it appears like it came from a maker in St.Louis. I have had several offers of
trade and cash. Would like to find out what I have got, before making a mistake of
trading it off.185830

You have a signal cannon. They are not intended to shoot a shell.

During the hey day of the big sailing yachts it was common to have a signal cannon on board. I don't know for certain if any of those are signal cannons but the Col's. sure look like they are.

I do not have a big yacht but when I had my 22 ft. Catalina I always wanted a little signal cannon. For my little 12 ft. Widgeon I think a signal .22 more appropriate.

This got me thinking of perhaps getting a thunder mug. Anybody know how much powder to use in a two-inch signal mug? Should it have an over-powder wad, perhaps newspaper?

By all means use Al foil (and common sense) unlike this guy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t8whVxTj7iQ
