As the title says. I'm wondering if there are issues shooting cast in a gas operated rifle. If you do do it, what kind of alloy hardness are you using, and GC vs PB?

Don't have a Beowulf but do shoot cast in my ar15 uppers in 9mm (yes 2 I have are gas operated) and a few in 357Maximum rimless. Waiting until it warms up a bit to go shoot the 44x1.6" and 44x1.8" with Lee 310gr gas check wide flat point bullets. The 9mm and max-rimless need a rounded or pointed tips to feed well. The 310wft get the corners rounded off going through the feed ramps. I've shot the 9s without gas checks without leading, but have used gas checks in everything else. If you're getting leading in the gas system with gas checks it could be a sharp or burred gas port.

Here's some reading with a quick seach. More available withna search. Accurate Molds has a 50-334 that is a copy of the Rainer 334 gr swaged bullet that is popular in the 50 B.

44x1.6" and 44x1.8"? where can I find info on those, I've never heard of them, are they for your ar? They're a couple of wildcat's based off of the 444 Marlin using 30-06 cases. 44x1.6" ended up with the same case capacity of a 445 SuperMag. The 44x1.8" is pretty close to 444marlin with the same barrel length, but the pressure is higher to get there. Post #298 here http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?102140-Show-us-your-wildcats!/page15 and from this past summer when I was making the ar10 44x1.8. Had a couple more 44 barrel blanks so I made the 1.6" length for the ar15. http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?312515-44-bgm

I shoot both gas checked and plain based bullets in mine. Now with the newest rage of coating bullets you wouldn't have to worry about gas tubes getting plugged and the chamber would stay much cleaner. My favorite alloy for the beo is 5050 ww/lineotype. But water dropped ww would probably do as well. Fairly high pressure round so getting real good accuracy at top velocitys with softer bullets is a challenge. For the most part I tried cast and went back to renieer plated bullets in mine. not because of leading but because there fairly inexpensive and shoot moa in my gun. Ive killed deer with both the hp and solid version and prefer the solid. the hollow point knocks the heck out of deer but does ALOT of damage. My gun shoots the solid a bit better to boot so it gets the nod.

Awesome post and replies, thanks!

Anyone shooting heavy, 500gr(ish) cast in their Beowulfs?

I shoot 506 and 594 grain plain base cast in my beowulf. I shoot it suppressed, and target about 1050fps. Still working on perfecting the loads, but it is looking promising. My gun is a 12.5" SBR and cycles these heavies great suppressed and unsuppressed. The mold I use is from Accurate. 50-506D and 50-594D. Ive also test some from a 50-435D and they fed great, but we're more difficult to maintain cycling when shot subsonic.

Ar 15 and AR 10, using Hi-Tek or Powder coat without any problems.

These are powder coated with Smokes Signal Blue. I size them to .502, and have a custom expander for them. I am currently in progress of getting the dies setup on my xl650 and loading these progressively (currently without case feed due to rebate rim in mouth issue).
