I got my first mold Christmas, a 44 mag devastator and 100 lbs of roofing lead. This is my first experience casting bullets. I have been reading this website for some time. Everything I have seen starts with coww and add this or that, I have no coww. What can I add to my lead to make a good hunting boolit.? I'm also looking for another hunting/target mold, maybe a 429421What/how much would I add to my lead for this.

Go to lasc.us and go to the bullet alloys page to get an idea of what you will need to alloy with your pure lead. Some foundry type or monotype would be a good start. Look at our vendors and our swapping and selling section to find someone that has what you are looking for. IIRC, someone had some linotype at a good price, for sale on the S&S

16-1 or even 10-1

And if you decided that you need coww and don't want to buy anything extra..... there are a lot of folks looking for pure roofing lead instead of their mountain of coww. It would be easy to trade.

+1 on 16-1 alloy. I use that for my own Devastators which I push hard over H110 out of my Ruger and Colt revolvers along with a Contender. Expansion and penetration is excellent. They will not shatter as is often claimed of HPs. It is my go to hunting bullet with the 44 Magnum.

Mix 1 lb of tin to 16 lbs of your lead.

30 lbs of lead, one five pound ingot of RotoMetals Super Hard (30% antimony, 70% lead) and two pounds of pewter or tin would give you close to Lyman #2.

Yup, I shoot for Lyman #2 myself.

Got any linotype laying around? Tin??

tin would do the job.
adding a bunch to a hunting hollow point doesn't quite work the way you want it to.
at about 1200 fps 20-1 or even 25-1 would provide enough hardness to get down the barrel.
but not too much to create alloy shearing of the hollow point in the animal.
remember tin is brittle and resists bending and breaks when bent [that's the creaking and popping you hear when you bend tin]
pretty counter productive in high amounts with a hollow point.

Thanks for the info. Those that hunt with SWC do you alloy it hard enough to shoot or harder so the bullet will not deform? I'm hunting deer in nc so they are less than 200 lbs. Looks like I need to find some tin.

You may be able to find some pewter as a substitute for the tin since it's generally over 92% tin. Ay least the stuff I find in NC.

ive shot a few deer with the 44 devastator. What I used was 5050 ww/pure. It did the job. Lyman advertises it as a hp that will work with straight ww. That seems a bit hard to me but at 5050 they expanded and did lots of damage.

#452484 cast from mystery metal and fired using a medium range 45ACP hard ball load.

Big hollow points will open up for you without a whole lot of velocity.
For hunting you just need the alloy soft enough to not shatter and enough weight to keep pushing through.

that almost looks like the copper alloy I made, I think its 3-ish% or is that golden tint just the lighting? either way, nice boolits:awesome:

yep I would go with 16/1 or even 20/1
that is what I use most often in my devastator mold

Thanks for the help. I got some 50/50 solder today to make some 16-1 now I need a good pan lube for this load. I have looked at 100s of recipes on here. Can someone point me to some that would be good for pan lubing this boolit?

bens red or my 'simple lube' will both work as pan lubes.
the simple lube is easy to adjust softer or harder by adjusting the Vaseline amount, but will work as the recipe is posted in the thread.
bens is about soft enough as is.
a quick search will turn up both recipes.
