Been going back thru my records for loads and it seems that my accuracy with every one at about 1600 and only a few get better at a higher speed. I use just wheel weights, nothing added, lube with LLA,and add a gas check and do not use fillers. I load for 8mmx57,30-30,308 and 30-06. size .325 for the 8mm and .308 for the 30 cal. I would like to hear from any one with the same or different results. The powders I use are IMR4198 IMR3031,IMR4895and Unique.

Try easing your way up with slower powders; avoid ball powders, use something like 4320 and 4350 or equivalents. The trick is to get a little more push but keep the pressure the same. I don't think SEE is a consideration at the pressures we're talking about here. No, I haven't tried it, just theory.

Regular WWs with nothing added is a fairly soft alloy. Your 1600 fps is right at the bottom of the RPM threshold with the 9 1/2 -10" twist barrels you are using, which explains why accuracy, for the most part, doesn't improve with higher velocity/RPM. Adding 2-3% tin and WQing the bullets would get you the same accuracy up through 1800-1900 fps. With the 3031 and 4895 a 1/2 - 3/4 gr filler of dacron would help also. That's if you want to get higher velocity. Sounds like you're happy with what you've got and nothing wrong with that:-)

My dumb question , whats SEE?

Secondary Explosion Effect, caused by too-light charges of some Ball powders in some cartridges.

Secondary Explosive Effect, something that sometimes happens when using too small an amount of very slow powder.

It's all about pressure and the boolit's resistance to irregular deformation. Water dropping or heat treating will enable a heavier charge of the same powder to deliver more velocity while maintaining accuracy.

i use a harder mix and i run between 1900and 2000 fps.
this seems to be where my 1-10 twists like the medium and slow powders
the slower powders 4831,etc do really well at 1650 to 1700 at 50 yds especially,, at 100 they
do okay but the mediums 322,4895, with a filler seem to do better from 100 to 300 yds.
you can get higher velocity with the slower powders but your boolit and lube have to keep
up. especially after 2200 fps.

Papa,
My understanding of SEE is that a small charge of slow burning powder lying essentially level in the case is ignited across the top by the primer. This causes pressure to build from the rear and also front of the charge. Both combine to raise pressures to the point of detonation. I do know of one case of "possible SEE" in a springfield using small charge of 4831. Hope this helps.

Thanks to everyone for your replies. I am very happy wth 1600fps since 99% of my shooting is at paper and 100 yds or less. I was just wanting to know if anyone else had the same kind of things happening with their loads. Good shooting!
