Mrs. Nihan was a little old lady who used to be our 'next door neighbor' to the east. Her house is visible from ours, but is nearly a mile away.
She almost always wore a cowboy hat when outside, and would bend the sides down with a scarf in the winter.

One day, around noon (a couple of winters before she finally moved to town), she went out to the road to look in her mailbox. Being close to ninety, and trying to negotiate the deep snow, she managed to take a bad fall, and then slid down into the bottom of the bar ditch.

I guess she was there for about two hours, unable to rise, and passing drivers were unaware of her presence.
It is said that she was starting to believe that she would die there, and it surely would have happened if darkness had fallen.

She gradually became aware of a loud approaching noise, and knew it to be the snow plow.
To make a bad situation worse, it was coming from the west, and blading the snow into the same ditch she was laying in.

Knowing that it was her only chance, Mrs. Nihan watched the snow cascading over the bank until she estimated the plow was close enough...then sailed her cowboy hat up over the road.

The operator saw the hat, and she was saved. If the fall crippled her up any more than she was to start with, I couldn't tell it.

Yep. Mrs. Nihan was a tough old bird...like most of the women out here who live long enough to get 'old'.
