I saw a deer 3 weeks ago and noticed it was limping badly. I let it walk but after thinking about it I decided if I saw it again I would shoot it. Yesterday she came by at about 40 yards. One shot with a NOE 311165 out of my 30.30 put it down. The right shoulder was basically wasted away & the rest of the deer was very poor. The wound looked healed but I don't think the deer would have made it till spring. Today is the last day of modern gun for me & it is raining. Instead of getting soggy I'm staying inside. I figure it is a good thing all around. I'm not out in the rain, I did get some meat and the deer will not suffer anymore.

This makes 3 deer in 3 years of hunting with cast for me. The 1st and 2nd deer dropped in their tracks. This one ran about 40 yards but was on the ground in about 6 seconds. There certainly is something satisfying about getting an animal with a boolit you have cast yourself. Yea, I'd say I'm hooked.

Good for you for the meat, and good for the doe. Can't stand to see an animal suffer and with a bad limp, she'd have become another predator's meat and her death would not have been so quick and humane.

A six second death is a lot kinder than being eaten alive by coyotes. You did a good thing.

I haven't killed a deer with anything but my cast and a couple with arrows since at least 2009 and have killed an average of two a year. Maybe if I hunted long range it would be different, but they work just fine for me.

It's been quite awhile and a good many deer since I killed one with a jacketed bullet. Not one time in the last several years of using cast have I felt handicapped. I tend to hunt the thick stuff so range has never been an issue.

Calibers have ranged from 45 colt, 30-30, 30-40, 30-06 and two different 338s.
Terminal performance has been superb in all cases.

Cast bullets work and kill at longer ranges, too. Using both a Sharps 45-110 and a Sharps 45-70 and blackpowder loads in both rifles, I have taken a number of animals in Africa at distances from 200 to 550 yards on a laser rangefinder. The 520 grain Lyman 457125 and the 480 grain Lyman 457121 are both accurate and kill very well from the end of your gun barrel to well over 500 yards. Kudu and both black and blue wildebeast, both of which are about the size of a bull elk, are no problem with these bullets at 1200-1300 fps as they give complete pass through penetration and put the animals down on the ground with authority.

Been there did that you get an uneasy feeling at first then your brain understands the facts of life. The one I shot a couple yrs. ago had a bad limp and I dropped her quickly. Upon skinning we found a bullet on the oppisite side of the wound had been encapsulated in grissle like material which I suppose was causing her problems also. Glad it was done. Good for you to use a deer ticket for this sick deer.

I ca.me up on an accident.car in the ditch, woman calling police on the cb. Doeran in front of her and shehit it. Doe was standing about80yards in the field, I asked the officer wnted me to dispatch her. I shot her in the neck with a 250grain from my 35whelen. On skinning her ,the whole left side was injured
