Who makes these "Gator Checks" ?
i have only used Hornaday checks. I they are better and we can get a good price, I woud be interested in 35, 30, and 44 cal checks in that order.

I will be the trail boss in taking the orders should the board approve. Send your request(s) to me in an email. I want board name, full name, mailing address, caliber, quantity. I will then ask by USA region for sub honcho's to help in the distribution. We will be talking (in the end) that 5000 quantity count be minimum per caliber per region to be deciphered by me from the emails. Yes, this means multiple mailings, and extra costs. I will collect all money checks here, and all gas checks here from Larry. You can figure the cost will be three fourths of the cost of Hornady checks when all is said and done. The sub honchos will bill me for the postage, and I will refund any overage to the individuals. The only thing that will be free will be personal time. We cannot operate this scheme without sizeable orders, so order more than what you will need for the next few years. Nothing wrong in merging local orders, and it will sure help us doing the work. MARK THE EMAIL TITLE AS GASCHECKS. ... felix

Yes, go ahead and send requests to me at fmr72901 at juno dot com, and make title line GASCHECKS. Whatever I accumulate here will be kept until other arrangements, if any, will be made. When a total order of 50,000 checks arrive, then we can get serious about making a real deal out of it. Any advance money requests will be at a much later date. ... felix

Felix, I am going to take an inventory and let you know this week. "a much later date" The farther after Christmas the better for me, that money thieving St.Claus is on his way again. Dunno about the rest of the crowd, but I would say monies to you by Febuary would help me out a lot.

How much did they cost last time? Felix you state that they will run aprox 75% of what Hornady checks cost. I have seen them from $15 - $24. Could you mebbe narrow it down some? I don't want to commit to you and find out the price is $16 K. Thanks Jay

felix
11-09-2005, 10:25 AM
Last time the cost was about 12 bucks average per 1K. Postage is up, and so maybe the checks will be up as well. So, assume 15 bucks per 1K. We have 120K indicated so far. Probably won't get serious until after Christmas about ordering, so there is plenty of time to add to the pot, or take some out. ... felix

Does the total amount we order as a whole impact the total price? You (Felix) stated that we were already at 120K, if that went up to 200 or 300 would our price drop even more? :-P

felix
11-09-2005, 02:04 PM
Daniel, that would be great! HC, you can assume that the more we order, the cheaper the price. Whatever, we have to pay his price to get the checks, and I am not going to call him until we get a great amount so he can't refuse to deal. BSM, BullShop mom, had to do this last time. I don't want to call Larry any more than ONE time. What would be nice, Dan, if we also had the dimensions of each check he does make, so we can be sure of our order without doubt. ... felix

I have a 35 cal mold that casts slightly undersize shanks to the tune of about .005-.007 smaller than another that is a press fit for Hornadys. Will the Gators crimp down on these? I read that Dan over at Mountain Molds says the 45 cal variety does crimp tighter. If so then you can count me in for 2k of 35 and 45.

On looking at the Mountain Mold site, Gator check page I understand that the 40/41 do NOT fit the Lyman .41 shank. I wanted 5K of the LYMAN shank .41 GC which is a separate check and definitely not the 40/41 as I understand them. Of course, I could be entirely wrong in which case just do what my wife does and ignores me. Don't know if you are tallying them up together, but just wanted to be clear in case it makes a difference later on. All my current molds use the Lyman GC and don't fit with the Hornady 416. The group buy .41 going on now may change that.

Thanks,

Felix, how many hundred thousand gas checks are you hunting for before declaring final costs and collecting the $$ checks?

Just curious, are you hunting another price break point? If so, then the lower cost at the new break point might prompt the extra order volume you need to actually reach it.

11-30-2005, 06:42 PM
Kelly, this will be once a year deal as far as I am concerned, so we need all the orders we can get for the best price break. Hopefully I can talk Larry into a batch price for all of the checks, rather than for individual check calibers, and just use reasonable percentages to calculate the total price charged per customer. Trying to make this job easy for all concerned. It would help to re-ship to "distributers", as I am thinking right now. We just want all costs to be reasonable for all concerned. No labor charges whatsoever. ... felix

I'll certainly be getting in on this order.

That list of orders to date is interesting. Seems to me that the amounts already ordered, or rather the DISTRIBUTION of the amounts spoken-for among the calibers, probably constitutes a very accurate survey of where our group's emphases lie with regard to the various diameters.

SEVENTY-ONE THOUSAND .30-caliber checks?!?! Jeez, I KNOW the wide array of .30s is popular, but Good Grief!

Take a look at the different numbers ordered, and give it some thought, and it may give some enlightenment. I'm tickled to see 5K ordered for the .416, for example, and surprised at the showing for the .35s. I ASSUME that most .35 checks will be used in rifles, and that impresses me, since I didn't really expect that much activity in .35 rifles.

Hi everyone,

How about ordering some gas checks in .348 WCF caliber? I'll bet with the current "group buy" order up to 425K, the makers of the Gator Gas Checks might find it hard to pass on that big of an order --- thus, they might be convinced to "tool-up" and make gas checks in .348 caliber.
So, lets start putting orders in for .348 gas checks and maybe we'll get lucky. It can't hurt to try.

Use a caliper to measure your shank diameter on all suspect boolits. If you give me what that measures, I will measure some checks I have here and see if they will fit over your shank. We want a very close fit, with very slight friction being ideal. Use the highest antimony mix you want to use with that boolit, water drop it, and wait a week before measuring. That will be the largest that shank will ever be.

IMPORTANT. There is confusion between 41 pistol and rifle, 45 pistol and rifle, and 50 pistol and rifle.

Your 41 pistol boolit must have a shank no larger than .380
Your 41 rifle boolit (416) must have a shank no larger than .3925
Your 45 pistol boolit must have a shank no larger than .425
Your 45 rifle boolit must have a shank no larger than .426
Your 50 pistol boolit must have a shank no larger than .460 or .468 and YOU MUST SPECIFY
Your 50 rifle boolit must have a shank no larger than .468 and YOU MUST SPECIFY short or long

If in doubt about any other check ID size, go to Mountain Molds and do a custom boolit design, and pick on the gas check size(s) there that approximates your existing boolit shank size.

Question on the 50 caliber RIFLE checks.

When did Larry start making short and long gas checks.

I have used his 50 caliber rifle checks for over 10 years now and the last time I bought some from him. About 3 years ago nothing was said about short or long.

FYI. I use these on the 50-110 (.512) bullets and anneal them to size down for the 505 Gibbs (.506)

I will in the AM measure what I have left and drop you a pm.

These both take std 30 cal GC's. A Horndaddy 30 cal check mikes about .318" od at the top of the cup. There are no '31' GC's. The '32' GC's are correct for Win 32 Special and 8mm's.

John, a confirmation letter via email will be forthcoming. Your total charge will be listed therein. Midsouth (or somebody) is selling these checks at a considerable markup over what Larry is charging us because of the group buy of so many at one time. It is obvious the 50 caliber checks at the retail stores are not selling, and they are willing to unload them at cost. Walmart does the same thing to make room for stuff that sells.

OK, OK, you guys. I don't want any overage, and you all know that. But here is the kicker, Pat, my wife, who is doing much of the work does. Somehow, someway she will add some handling fee to the order, like marking up to the nearest 5 bucks for the big orders, and progressively downwards for the smaller orders (in dollars). I will try to get some more rebate out of Larry for Pat first, however, because we are now talking over 6K dollars worth of checks.

Bottom line: Please don't send any more dollars than requested. Pat saw this last line, and now says that is a bunch of bunk and she will take any donation she can get.

Felix...
E-Mail will be on the way tomorrow for Gator order for .323, .358, and .430 gaschecks. I'll have to inventory what I have first.

Price of gaschecks has jumped...literally overnight. I placed an order at Midway and was going to include some .44 gaschecks. They're now $29.49! The .323s are $24.49. The price of all their checks have skyrocketed. Decided to go with the Gators instead and make an order for others while at it.

Thought I'd check Midsouth out of curiosity. All theirs have jumped also...323s for $19.99 and .44s for 24.13. Those Gators are now just over 1/2 of Midsouth...and less than 50% of Midway.

Don't know what's up with the price of Hornady's but those Gators are an excellent buy. If it's the cost of material, do you think Larry can still deliver at the advertised price? We may be ordering more than he expected and his cost for gilding metal may have jumped if he needs to order.

felix
01-23-2006, 12:07 AM
Yes, I told Larry that he won't loose a dime, and to make at least some to pay himself and a helper. The order is now circa 600 pounds of guilding metal, and he is now producing the checks we need. He is expecting some order variance plus and minus. We just have to get the price in line, and that is why I am waiting to tell you guys what the price is going to be. Larry said he will hold the prices to last year's a couple of months ago, but I am not going to hold him to that. Guilding metal in sheet form has doubled. ... felix

We have 112 members ordering as of now, paying 10,094 for checks, plus postage to make it 11,124 for a grand total. I switched the almost rock solid prices from Larry with those I found at Midsouth, and if we were buying from them individually at retail prices, we would pay 17,330, and that is without their postage added in. So, to make a sad inflationary story short, BUY what you need NOW from Larry via our group buy. PM me for adding to your orders. ... felix

Today & tonight is the last day to order gaschecks and/or make changes to existing orders. As a heads up, Sean, the honcho for the 41 group buy mold, has just changed his order from using the 416 checks to the Lyman 410 checks for the ease of sizing I think.

An email will be forthcoming restating your order, and you are required to send a check or money order (paypal for Finn) for the amount as stated on the email. If no payment arrives within a couple of weeks or so, then your order will be trashed. There is no cleaner way to do this, guys, without extreme hassle.

Our order to Larry is one million gaschecks, at 12,000 dollars, minus postage. Postage computes to be around 12 percent additional.

If Larry chooses not to supply the caliber of checks requested from any individual order, then your order will be recomputed as per forced change, including postage, and a check will be returned for that amount. The return check will be in one of the the package(s) sent to you.

Ditto, Lloyd. I've already suggested this. I would like to point out the high prices retailers are charging for thier production checks. On this deal, we are getting custom checks, that will stay on our bullets. Do some figuring on your savings, and send Felix at least half of your savings. That way, he MAY be willing to do this again in a couple years. As it is, I think this may have snowballed beyond expectations, and they are going to have a LOT of heavy handling to do with this order.

felix
02-01-2006, 10:28 PM
I have done my best to compute the charges based upon package quantity and volume (guesstimated for the most part) to make it fair for everyone as a group. Nowhere is weight considered. Also, I went through the database a few minutes ago trying to find out who are the guys really getting a very, very good deal. About 30 percent of the folks will have low (some are very, very low) shipping charges as based upon percentage cost of goods being shipped. I figure most folks will gladly pay 10 percent surcharge over the cost of goods for a postage cost, especially when no state tax is involved. BUT this is NOT going to be done to these 30 folks. So, if you 30 guys start to feeling like you are lucky, just compute something to add to the bill which would NOT exceed 10 percent of the goods sold (minus the postage being charged, of course). I would be upset if someone sent a gift when they are not one of the 30, and some of these folks will be paying more than 10 percent just because of how the shipping volume works out. The bill sent to each of you will show the cost of goods and the cost of postage as seperates, so gifting can be calculated should someone feel lucky. No names will be taken or remembered either way. Each and every one of you are part of my greater family of friends. ... felix

Felix,

Thank you very much for all your efforts! Do you have any ballpark date as to when the gas checks might be finished? Just curious...

Thanks,
John

John, you're just an easy one to pick on here, so please don't take it personally! This is just a place for me to blow off steam. I've seen people get irate about not having immediate return on an order at times.
When Felix, or anyone else, handles a special order, all they do is the collection of funds, ordering, and disbursement of the goods. There is no control over production, wheter it be gas checks, molds, or widgets, assuming we can find a widget that will hold into .001 tolerances. Any delivery time they may state will be a guess.
I am well aware of problems a manufacturter may have on acquiring the materials needed, along with various malfunctions that go along with any manufacturing process.
Why I throw this in here, I have seen deals like this for about ten years now, among the old Shooters group, and on through to the current page. So far, I don't remember anyone absconding with the funds, and retireing in Tahiti. I will say that this is probably the largest monetary order put together by this board to date, but I'm not worried. Felix is absolutely trustworthy, as are any other member who does this stuff. They have to be. Otherwise, we would hunt them down, and kill them. :o)
What is happening, is the people who handle these deals, have a life, and this stuff isn't necessarily in the forefront on what is important to them. Some need to make a living, some have a family they like to spend time with, some are just procrastinators, and some have health problems. But it always gets done.

Don't worry, be happy.

And this applies to all group buys we get involved with. Throw away your calenders, and your watch. These are custom orders you are dealing with. Try ordering ANYTHING custom, and pin down a delivery date. Then let me know how many come in on the specified time. I usually add three months onto a delivery date, and the customers are ecstatic when it shows up three months early.
In the past, I've seen some people get rather hot over something not being delivered when they thought it should be. Relax, and let it happen.

My question was very simple and not looking for a very specific time frame. I just wanted to know if there was a ballpark date of when the gas checks would be manufactured! If it's three months, that fine. If it's six months, that's fine... If there's a delay, that's fine also... I am willing to wait.

Knowing an approximate date allows would allow me to make other arrangements if I need specific gas checks before the ballpark manufacture/delivery date.

My gratious thanks goes out to ya'all for being so kind. However, the gratitude afforded might all get used up if the USPS finally decides not to allow the 5 dollar envelope which was determined sufficient for some orders by the computer program I wrote to size the orders. ... felix
felix ,
they got no choice. they did up the fee at the turn of the year, but that envelope and the two flat rate boxes are not weight sensitive...well up to the 70 lb carrier limit.
consider the small box as it is the same fee as the envelope.

and the big box is only 8.10.......

felix--over the years,I have seen a lot of deals go down on these boards, and I've been amazed at how few of them have seemed to have gone sour. I think you would have fewer bad deals from these boards than you would have dealing with friends, family, church etc. . I do hope you don't have any deadbeats, but I also hope if you do that you will identify them. I hope anybody that owes and has not paid will promptly do so to keep the fine record of the board intact.

Has the order already been placed? If not, simply cancel the orders of those who's payment doesn't arrive by the order date. If their check arrives after the order date, just return it.

If the order was placed and the commitment made before the money was in hand.... well, someone's tail is going to be hanging in the breeze. You're dealing with the public here, and some people aren't reliable when it comes to coughing up green. You'll find a few in every crowd unfortunately.

Joe, you need to crank up your gascheck operation. You are missing out on about 14K bucks per year? Just think, you won't have to hussle because you have a years time to make up 1M checks. As luck would have it, Larry gave me permission to short the order without financial impact. He has been kept updated weekly on the orders since from December 1, so we don't want to short him if someone else really wants the checks. It would be best if you sent me an addendum to your order IF YOU REALLY WANT THE CHECKS. Chances are good your mailing cost won't be impacted, at least, hopefully so.

As per Mr. Hickory Nut, I will take every tree you can dig up that is either the Shagbark or Shellbark variety, and Sundog and I will be glad to help you plant them in OUR yards. Yes, we are in a hurry too, because we want to live long enough to see some Nuts we would enjoy eating. ... felix

Now, will ya hurry up and get this gas check deal out of the way?!!!

Then you can get busy on the PRIMER buy!

Sorry, just had to share...
In one of the emails Felix sent me, he inadvertently used the word "primer", where he meant to say "gas check". Let me tell you, I was all over that deal like a duck on a june bug. I was wanting to know prices for all the versions of primers, and haz-mat, just the whole ball of wax. In my own defense, I thought maybe he was puttin' together a primer deal, too! He was sure quick in replying that he MEANT gas checks, not primers! Had a good laugh, anyway. That probably shows the amount of stress he has been coping with. Well, we'll just have to endeavor to persevere. Thanks again, man.
