I suspect we had an anomoly go on with Hickory Creek. In the past, he had been respectful and informative in his posts. Maybe it was a bad day, who knows? All it takes here, is a simple apology, and we move on. I''ve been pissed at some of my best frinds in the past, and would exchange harsh words. After a few days, the guy who pooped the bed, admitted it. And we are stlll friends

amen to that waksupi. Ive said things ive regretted on some boards too. Bad day at home or work. No patients with a beginner or an idiot ect. You just have to be man enough to admitt you made a mistake and properly appologize. Hickory creek owes us nothing. He does owe felix an appology though. Hickory Creek ain't all that bad except for maybe his manners. I checked his order before deleting it, and he ordered checks that could be obtained at the same price as Larry's on the open market. It seems no retailers want to carry the 50 caliber checks (that Hickory ordered), because there is no real demand, and those that do carry this flavor will gladly unload them at their (Larry's) cost anyway. So, why wait if they are needed right now? Now that I have been placed on the Supreme Court, that is my decision. Hickory Creek ain't all that bad! ... felix

Felix .... You remind me of my wife. She has never gotten real excited about negative things in her life. Hell ... She had Cancer and had to go through chemo and bone marrow transplants and I never once heard heard her complain or say " why me ". She is the most perfect person in my life. In May we will be married 35 years. I definately picked the right one the first time around. She has definately put up with more than her share of all this shootin stuff. Once in awhile she goes along with me to the range and makes sure she can still hit the bad guy. Just how many guys on here think they can even think about holding a candle to her. I'd be willing to bet that it is not too many. I tip my hat to ya. Thanks again for your time in this gas check deal.

Felix,
I just wonder, are these gas checks flared any on the mouth so as to seat them onto the bullet bases easily? It would be nice if they were.
Thank you SIR fior your time and sacrifices in this endeavor.
Jeff.

felix
02-23-2006, 11:58 AM
Yes, they are flared out to Hornady specs. The shank diameters intended for each check size had been posted (within this thread somewhere). However, some of Larry's flavors are thicker than Hornady's, and would be harder to size as a result. They are actually intended for larger sizing. For example, he has 45 checks in two flavors. One for sizing to 452, and the other for 458. But, both have the same shank diameter intended. Like everything else, every check lot will be different, so you can only hope for the best. Larry guarantees quality, though, but he can't control sizes without major expense. Even not counting the dies wearing down, the copper coming in the door for the check size intended might not be kosher in terms of alloy or size. ... felix

Felix, has the final order been sent to Larry yet?

felix
02-23-2006, 01:02 PM
Yes, what represents the final order has been emailed to him a week ago. There will be some variance based upon the money arriving on time (this weekend at latest). Deadbeats will not get their order, and Larry has agreed to discounting the order in commensuration. Therefore, there should not be any checks left over.

Also, those folks who ordered 348 checks will get a refund check for that flavor. Just not enough ordered this year to tool up. Maybe next year. ... felix

felix
02-23-2006, 01:06 PM
It costs 600 bucks to tool up for a caliber. Larry uses carbide equipment. ... felix

Beau Cassidy
02-23-2006, 08:11 PM
I will go ahead and place an order for next year for 5K .348 checks. At $600 startup per caliber, I don't see how he could ever recoup that invstment and still make a profit. Regardless, if anybody wants to jump in, I am good for at least that many. What is the ballpark guestimation on his turnaround time?

Beau

felix
02-23-2006, 09:33 PM
Beau, if I am not mistaken, I think it is/was David Mos who makes the tools for Larry. The next time I talk with Larry, I'll bring the subject up and see how many checks he would have to do to make his profit desired. He said he will make about 4K profit on our order this time around, which is around 33 percent of final cost to us, and he seemed happy enough about it. So, that makes for a 50 percent markup over total cost. Therefore, we can figure how many checks he would have to make for us to clear his profit. Our basis for making a stab at cost to us should be based upon 12K for 1M checks, plus 15 percent increase over that because of added utility costs next year (he said). ... felix

Close to a month, I'd say. It's in Larry's court, now. I would like to use this board for those of you who ordered to say how much NEED there is to have their order in hand. I will put their names at the top of the list on mailings when the whole shootin' match arrives here. Those who have a couple months of checks on hand should NOT so indicate. The overseas orders will go first because of obvious delays within the mailing system. ... felix

You all don't know how much I have relied upon the encouragement I have gotten from the members of this board. Without it, you can bet no body in their right mind would undertake such an endeavor.

I sure like the idea of Don's trading checks out with Mark (7BR). That really, really helps, but I have to have some indication here on this board (sticky) of who owes what so I can divert the checks ordered to the giver instead. MAKE THIS EMPHATIC when stating the transaction to the board, please.

Larry is an eye doctor, and these gaschecks are a hobby turned simi-professional. Quality is his motto on all accounts, but lots of time he does not have. He maintains several offices around the greater area of Monroe LA, and he travels to each during a typical week. I will have to give him a call sometime this week and see if he is just burned out. A million gas checks, remember, comes to over 800 pounds of copper. That's lots of punching. ... felix

Felix, I gotta ask, how are you packaging these. I got this picture in my head of you and your wife at the kitchen table going.... one, two, three, four......999, 1000! I mean there are hundreds of thousands of checks. Then I thinking your using the Lee dipper method with a cup, or maybe dumping a handful on a scale. Whatever method your using, it must be very time consuming. Please fill me in!

felix
04-23-2006, 10:30 PM
Graciously, Larry and Joe (JDL) pre-packaged them according to the database records I supplied. They put the orders in 16 large boxes according to caliber. No names were placed on the individual packages. That is what we are doing now, starting with the orders having financial returns because 348 and 264 checks were not supplied this time. The 348s are not going to be produced anytime soon. And, we did not want to hold up the total order waiting for the 264s to be produced. New dies have to be made, and will be up and running in the next couple of months. Larry said he will supply 264s to the individuals who call in to him directly asking for them, but the caller will have to pay the bill for them. The money for this endeavor will be refunded by me. EVERYONE please be careful of making sure you see an envelope taped on an envelope containing gaschecks. That attatched on envelope will have a check from me. DO NOT throw away any packaging without through investigation. The first wave of shipments will be taken to the post office tomorrow morning. ... felix

OK, Lloyd, hope I don't forget! Will have to do yours in the next couple of days anyway because of this oddball request. Just because there is a note in the database does not mean I will see it. What I am trying to say here, is that if one of you good folks get a wrong caliber, please indicate on the board here. Somebody else has your flavor, and that's a fact. If we don't communicate here, the info can be lost or misplaced. Trading must be done at the local level, and not back here at my house. I have all necessary addresses (snail and email) to help you make the trade(s) pronto. These are my problem examples: Was that a 375 or a 357 order in that package just mailed? 45 rifle or 45 pistol in that box? Please bear with me, folks! ... felix

felix

One more thing, folks. I am a little worried about shipments already made using the 5 dollar mailers. Please, after arrival take them out and use some of them immediately. Tell me if the checks have been bent by the post office piling the mailers on top of one another or sandwiching them between heavier parcels. THIS IS IMPORTANT. Until I hear from some of you all about this, I will concentrate on the larger shipments that require heavier duty boxes to ship. ... felix

Man, what a day!

The Mail Lady rang the door bell and was singing to my wife "Have I told you lately that I love you?" (I think is was a little sarcastically, actually) because she dropped off the box of gas checks, with .264 rebate enclosed (THANK YOU SIR!!), a box with a large Cook Book, and another box with a 4 C boolit mould!!

Not ten minutes later UPS rings the door bell with two large boxes of our new window blinds for all 6 windows in the bedrooms!! (Have I told you lately how much I Love remodeling?)

Whew!! And all this comes just after I spend 3 hours mowing the lawn!!

It's time for a beer break!:-D

Yes, Lloyd, the computer support would be welcomed for the next go-around. Larry said he won't, at this time, do any more 1M batches. Way too much stress in keeping everything straight and honest. I suggested using graduated cups/cylinders, but he wanted to be more accurate. That's fine and dandy, and is welcomed, but is hard on the nerves. We might just do quarter years from now on. Just how yet, I have to talk to some folks who have an all night computer operation that does banking stuff. I don't like, and cannot emotionally handle computers that go down, even for an instant. I am just to used to dealing with extremely fine mainframes. Microsoft code and associated hardware just doesn't cut it, but it might be the only way we can do what we want at a cost that is commensurate. ... felix

Felix,
Kodak is now just Eastman Chemical. Biggest dang outfit I have ever seen. They had record profits again last year. Their water purification plant is just about as large as the one for Jackson, MS, where I used to live. To give you a comparison, Jackson has probably between 500k and 600k people. Kingsport has what, maybe 60k? The spinoff industry from that plant still just blows me away. They make 1/3 of the world's cigarette butts there. Another 1/3 is made at their rival in SC and I believe the rest are made in China. You get used to the chemical smell after a couple of years. Luckily I live closer to Johnson City and the prevailing winds keep my air odor free. This end of TN does have some of the worse air in the country with I believe Knoxville at #3. I am fairly sure Chattanooga is in the top 20 as well. All I can figure is the eastbound wind gets trapped between the Cumberland Plateau and the Smokies and goes Northeast from there. Another interesting tidbit. The Bristol Motor Speedway- about 20 minutes from here- holds somewhere in the neighborhood of 160K. It's small change compared to Talledaga or the other big tracks but still, that's almost as many people as the Kingsport/Bristol/Johnson City area combined!

Felix,
Got my order yesterday. Was as ordered. By the way, checks seem to be of excellent quality. I am extremely pleased with the .41 checks. The previous 1000 I had ordered from lyman had about a 10% reject rate. These snap on with enough resistance to keep them on the shank until seated.

I have checked and sized about 35 .22 bullets. Should have a range report by monday.

Many thanks and Kudos to the service and the quality.

Checks arrived today...in fine shape and exactly as ordered.

Many, many thanks to you and your wife for taking this on, Felix. It's obvious that it had to cost you and your wife no small amount of time and effort...one just has to look at all the individual mailings and add up all the necessary bookkeeping, sorting and packing that went with each one to figure that one out.

...and fine looking gas checks they are!!

Thanks again!

Felix -

The 7k checks came in today. I eyeballed 'em, held 'em up to the light, and they seem pretty rightous, at least within the specifications of the measuring instrument (my eyeball...) [smilie=1:

I'll dig out the caliper tomorrow, and maybe even go to the pawn shop and spring for the mics I saw there today.

Kidding aside, you and your wife have built up some serious bullet-caster Kharma!

Thank you, Sir, and Lady!
