i have a lyman deerstalker(flintlock) in 50cal(1 in 48" twist). i find that i can use a 188gr roundball with a charge of goex ffg(75 gr) goes around 1 1/2 - 2" at 50 yards. i was wondering if i could use a 50cal sabot with a 250gr mihek hp(.430) or a 275gr ranch dog(.430") , what much powder(goex ffg) do i try to start out with? 60-70gr?

i've shot roundball for years now. i want to try something different on deer. 50-60 yards is more than enuff to hunt deer with. i've tried maxi balls and i shot a couple of deer with them. like i said, i would like to try something different.

thanks!!!!

Ive had zero luck with sabots over 185 grains. The best so far were 63 grain and 160gr sabots offered by Thor Bullets. But as we say, who does or doesnt shoot in my gun, may or may not shoot well in your.

My brother is shooting the Gould 45-70 boolit, which is supposed to cast around 330 grains in his T/C Hawken cap gun with sabots and 100 grs. of FFG. It shoots in an inch or so at 50 yards, and didn't do last years 5 pt. any good at all. :)

get crush rib sabots and a short nose 451 bullet. should load easy and cut center every time at 100 yards. ive even used up to 100 grains behind it, if you can find 200 grain short nosed bullet in .451 they would shoot way way out their. have fun with your good rifle.
