I'm casting a Lyman mold, 358477 for my .357 revolver - It throws a 150g bullet. Anyone have any experience with this bullet style? I tried loading it over 11g of 2400 as well as 12g of 2400 and I'm not too impressed with the accuracy. It also leads the bore slightly. I'm thinking the powder is too slow to obturate the bullet properly - whatta ya all think? I know when I shoot 158g wad cutters from my Taurus, they are dead on accurate at 25 yards. This bullet does about a 4" circle at 25 yards (these are all off hand incidently). I know the gun is more accurate than what I tried tonight. So, any ideas? My quest continues.......

Is it sloppy for the bore?
What does it measure? I size mine at .358 and they are great. My revolvers like .358.

You are in a quandary. You need to go faster, but you are already leading. Call that a catch 22.

12 grains is only 23,000 psi and about a 70% burn rate. My cut off for a magnum primer is 80% burn rate.

Do what ever it takes, change lube, mold harder, size bigger so that you can run about 14 grains of 2400 without leading too badly and hang on. That is 85% burn rate out of a 6" tube, so this won't need the hotter primer.

you could try a faster powder to see if it will bump up for ya.

I love that bullet in a 38 spl over 5.4 gr Unique. Gianni

They're sized to .358, which works great for my other SWC's. I wanted to use Titegroup, but couldn't find a recipe for 150g bullet. Maybe 4.5g for a starting load? Since I had 2400 on hand, I thought I'd give it a try. I also have several other varieties of power available so I'm not limited to 2400. I'll keep experimenting and see what hapens.

As an aside, when I cleaned the gun last night - one or two swipes with a bore brush removed all traces of lead, so it wasn't as bad as I had originally thought.

It's a journey - one in which I enjoy the challange (and I meet a lot of nice people along the way too!).

Thanks.....

Try 5.0 Unique in 38 cases and try shooting them either as cast in Lee Mule Snot lube, or get a larger sizer. .358 is smaller than I would try in anything but an older Colt with their tighter barrels. I prefer to size as large as the cylinder will allow.

With a PB boolit you need good fit or you will get problems.
