I was working this weekend with one of my Deputies who is retired from the Army and was an air traffic controler. I learned that his ex profession does not suit him for dealing with civilians who are not prone to follow directions.
We were out in the hot sun for abut 3 hours directing traffic around a local parade. About 1/2 way into the parade we are directing people left through the intersection and a lady in a Caddy dives up with heright turn signal on. We have the right lane blocked with Ford Explored painted red and white with full light bar flashing red, white and blue lights. I am blocking one lane stopping traffic and Deputy BOB is directing the people to go to the left. He is blowing a whistle and pointing to the left. Our Caddy driver stops in the middle of the intersection stopping all traffic and points to the lane blocked by the cruiser,"can't I go that way?". "No" BOB says, "that is the parade route you need to go left". "But Ineed to go right". "GO LEFT"!!!
"But I would let the parade by"?
"Lady they wouldn't be paying me to stand out here and point left if you could go right now move that G/DCaddy!!!"
I walked over to BOB and before I could say a word he look at me and said, " For 20 years if I said land on runway #2 they landed on #2 and by G@d I'm not changing now".
