These were from a 3" S&W 65-6 pushed with 10.0gr of Blue Dot and Federal 200 primers.
The powder coated and sized .358 boolits were from an unknown alloy with a BHN 11.
A Lee TL358-158-SWC mold, actual boolit weight was 160gr.
They were retrieved from a course sand/clay media fired from 30 feet away.
Dang chronograph refused to cooperate at all that day so best guess might be close to 1250fps.

Just for comparison, some 35750 (158gr) XTP's with 11.5gr of Blue Dot behind them.

dang that dirt is tough on them.
I find quite a few hollow-point bullets in our dirt that looks like I could re-shoot them.
unless they hit a rock.

I finally got around to test for the velocity again.
Average from the same revolver was 1175fps.
Had a high of 1212fps and a low of 1146fps. I threw those out the window.

Oh, and the XTP's averaged 1286fps.
Had a high of 1317fps and a low of 1245fps. Threw those out the window too!
Maybe one day I'll put a pin gauge to the cylinders and see if that has anything to do with it.

Thanks for the write up. The TL358-158 is the first bullet I ever cast and I use a lot of them having great results with both PC and 45/45/10.

I'm amazed that one looked just like a dime after it was fired. Keep that one--will make a great story

I use Bluedot in .357, but almost always with cast. Your load for the 158 XTP seems a little hot. Alliant recommends a maximum load of 10.2 grains of Bluedot with a 158 grain jacketed.

Same here, makes a good plinking round, can be pushed if PC'd and does fine with tumble lube. Works well over a pretty broad range of loads from mouse fart at ~750 fps to let's make a dime out them at ~1200 fps. I'm just getting some plain base pop can gas checks on a few of those SWC to try that combination out, .357 probably pushed by some 2400 or maybe H110. Be nice if I could collect them afterwards.

Published data using Blue Dot and 158gr jacketed is all over the place.
Lyman 46th Edition lists 11.9gr as their max at 1319fps from a 4" barrel.
Speer #11 lists 13.0gr as their max at 1349fps from a 6" barrel.
Sierra Edition V lists 12.6gr as their max at 1250fps from a 6" barrel.

A 13 gallon kitchen trash can filled with sand will do it.
I have yet to penetrate more than 10" with a 262gr cast .452 at 1130fps or a 243gr cast .430 at 1410fps.

Good to know. Seems simple enough.

I've recovered my PC'd boolits from a sand, gravel berm with similar results. Still have not found the dime shaped one though! :kidding:

That dime from a bullet looks good enough to spend. Let's see 3.2 cents for a primer, 1.5 cents for powder and 3.0 cents for the boolit. The math works out that we could make money shooting.
All kidding aside some good info was provided. Thanks
