Am considering this mold for SD loads in my 4 inch 25-5 in .45 Colt. Anybody use it, and what is your impression of it? Thanks.

I use it in 45 ACP and it is heavier than the standard 230gr load, has a bit more recoil, but makes one heck of a good bowling pin load. Anything that works for pins, works on deer and for SD purposes. For up close, say within 10yds, you could choose any boolit under the sun in 45 Colt and still have a good defense load, I don't think you could choose a bad one in this caliber, it is a big boolit, it will do a lot of damage.

You could even load them upside down in their cases, I don't think it will make a bit of difference if used in a SD situation.

Currently the two 45 Colt revolvers that are loaded here have the 454190 loaded above 9.0gr Herco.

I think the alloy would make more difference than the boolit, I like it fairly soft, can dig a thumbnail into it, with soft lube. HP not needed nor recommended.

Thanks DougGuy. So, you shoot this bullet in a .45 ACP autoloader and it feeds well? I assume you taper crimp it on the front driving band?

Yep taper crimp, with about .060" sitting out front of the case mouth. This is one of my throated barrels, they feed quite well when the throat is setup for cast at .452"

Well, that may have just sold me on that bullet. I have a Colt Gold Cup, and if I can use this bullet for .45 ACP as well as the .45 Colt, that is a win - win situation for me.

You will probably have to send me the barrel for throating. I don't know if you are familiar with my work but I do a lot of cylinders and barrels which work great with .452" afterwards, not so well beforehand.

I shoot them in a WWII era GI 45 replica and it gobbles them right up.

I'll keep that in mind if I run into problems. However, I shoot the Lyman 452460 sized to .452 in the Gold Cup without any problems. Thanks.

This is my all time #1 favorite bullet that I've ever cast! It is about as sexy as a bullet can be. And it works well in a 1911. It's VERY accurate in the 1911 and also in my SBH Hunter in 45 Colt. In fact I took my first cast bullet deer with one in my DW 1911 last year.

Ah, I'm getting that "warm and fuzzy" feeling about this one. Just ordered one from Miha.

Personally, I favor the wide meplat RF styles over the Keith or other shouldered LSWC designs. For a revolver, the ogive is more parallel to the forcing cone and is less abrupt when leaving the cylinder to engage the forcing cone to rotate the cylinder into alignment with the barrel.

For an autoloader, the RF makes more sense in that the ogive mimics the shape of a round nose boolit, which in 45 ACP is pretty much THE magic boolit when feeding is discussed.

A guy can use up a lot of important time focusing on one boolit or one style, while turning blinders to it's counterpart. In addition to the 454423, you should try one of the 250gr LBT WFN boolits. There are three that are all excellent for what they do.

If the .454-423 doesn't work well in the .45 ACP, it's no problem, as the bullet is primarily for the .45 Colt. I've already got the Lyman 452460 SWC and Mihec .452-200 for the .45 ACP, and the RCBS .45-255-SWC and Mihec 45-270 SAA for the .45 Colt.

The Lyman version was designed for 45 auto rim.
