A friend of a friend recently bought a CZ rifle in 17 Hornet.
He ordered 30 boxes, 750 rnds, of Hornady factory ammo from Midway USA.
Thinking that would give ammo to shoot and 750 rnds. of brass for reloading.
When the ammo arrived he noticed that the primers were staked in.
My friend had previously bought factory 17 Hornet ammo and found that the brass with staked primers had over size primer pockets. The reason for staking in the primers thus making them unusable for reloading.
My friends friend called Midway and made a complaint. Midway says that all ammo sales are final with no returns.
He then calls Hornady and they say there is nothing they can do about it. They state that only 10% of shooters are reloaders so they didn`t see it as an issue.
Hornady had a bunch of brass with out of spec (oversize) primer pockets and staked them in rather than discard them. Seems Hornadys QC is not what we hoped.
There is rumors that some of their 204 bras has the same issue.
BTW, Hornaday told him the brass is NOT safe to reload....dale

I don't think Hornady makes their own brass.

Huh, all of my once fired 17HH brass seemed under sized on the primer pockets as I had to swage them.

I am surprised at that response from Hornady. Midwayusa, not so much. If a recent purchase, I'd revisit with hornady about the ammo/brass situation. And speak with a supervisor.

This thread may not be cast bullet related but may be of interest to some.
The ammo was bought recently, this month.
The primer pocket issue was supposedly resolved in 2013.
This ammo may have been stored in a warehouse somewhere and just hit the market.
My son bought some factory ammo and has not gotten any of the out of spec stuff....dale

More than likely Starline makes their brass.

Unfortunately I think this will become a bigger issue vs getting smaller. As hornady said, 'only 10% of buyers are reloaders, so isnt an issue'. Translated to 'screw you, its cheaper to do it this way'. We have seen threads on the screwy 9mm brass being sold now, yea brass but useless for reloading. More and more brass is coming with crimped primers, maybe the reason is not a military thing but compensating for sloppy primer pockets, crimping fixes such issues. I stopped buying S&B ammo due to odd primer pockets or undersized flash holes.

More than likely Starline makes their brass.

We could only wish that Starline would. They do not, and if they did the quality would be of very high quality and any problems would be fixed faster than it would take for someone to make a post about it.

I got this from the Hornady site:

CARTRIDGE CASES: All Hornady ammunition is loaded using premium cartridge cases, with most being made on-site at the Hornady case production plant. As with all Hornady products, only the highest quality raw materials are used and our manufacturing process and quality control procedures lead the industry in consistency and efficiency.

This coupled with its the short .444 brass convinces me that swearing off of Hornady would be prudent. Don't much take well to being shown the middle finger like that,,,,

Some place I read the early 17HH brass was made by privi partisan?
I have used a fair bit of their brass in other calibers and picked up several hundred of their 22 hornet, no problem with these.

Now tell me me about the CB's for a 17. I am all ears, but don't know if I could handle
the frustration casting the little Devils.

Pain in the bud to keep the mold warm with only 32 grains of lead a shot. But a lit bunsen burner and way hot alloy makes good bullets.
I dont size but tumble with hBN for lube.
In my CZ 17HH around 1900fps is the limit (140000rpm) before it scatters.
Chamfered case mouths is a must.

The short .444 brass was not a QA issue, it was intended that way to crimp the leverevoultion bullets in the right place. I'm not a fan of Hornady brass, but if we are going to be critical it needs to be placed in the right place.

What alloy are you using? I would think Lino would be a good one.

I was on the Winchester site and saw they are now loading 17 Hornet ammo.
This may be a better source of 17 Hornet ammo/brass....dale
