Reading a thread about making your own #11 caps in Front Stuffers caused a long dormant brain cell to tick to life and resulted in a memory.. or a day-dream. Didn't Forster or someone once make a device to punch gas checks out of aluminum cans? The way the price of checks have gone it might be an idea whose time has come!

I have heard rumours that Paco Kelly is trying to revive the Freechec tool over on the Leverguns list. I don't know the status of that project. I hope it is true, as I simply cannot find the old Lyman .41 caliber gas checks without paying a truly obscene amount of $. And the Hornady 416s simply do not fit without annealing and opening.

The Hanned Line (Dennis Hastert?) offered such a product prior to going bankrupt. The price, however, was ~$140 if I recall correctly (Maybe that's why they went belly up.) for a precision-made (machined) tool. Unfortunately, you'd have to use beau coup GC's before you'd break even and that doesn't factor in the time spent producing them.

Have you tried .44 checks? I had 10 or so hornady 44 checks and did a small run. Seemed like I had passable accuracy. I am needing to do some more spearmenting, but ran out of lube, time and money. Will get back to it some time I hope.

Sounds like it is worth a try at least. I have a few 44 GCs somewhere. Thanks for the idea.

Check out the thread under Casting Equipment. I asked about that last week & got all kinds of good info. :coffeecom
