I am a real fan of the BIG bullet and not real fast

So the other day I ran into a deal that I couldn't pass up

One of the "Smart" , I can take any recoil guys in the gun club
Had a Savage rifle in 458 Winchester and couldn't take the recoil

So he had a 7 Rem Mag barrel installed

He had a like new Barrel , 38 rounds of ammo , 122 cases and a unused RCBS set of dies for sale ....he wanted $200
But I offered him $100 and he took it

So later today I am going to take the 338 Win mag barrel off and screw on the 458 barrel and see if I need to change the mag
I guess for now I will leave the Leupold 2x7 on the rifle

OK I don't plan on reducing my shoulder into mush ( But I still want the big shots to see me shooting the 458 and not complaining LOL )
So I plan on shooting NOE .460 405 gr RF in it as I have a bunch cast for the 45/70
Also the short term plans only call for targets and deer hunting , till I save enough for a big bear hunt

I figured a Marlin 45/70 type load should do fine on the shoulder , deer and targets
Only thing that will be hurt is my lead supply

So give me a few easy on the shoulder reduced loads to try

Thanks
John

I like 32.5grs of imr 4198. I am shooting a noe 460-425gr rnfp with that at about 1400fps should work great for the 405!

not sure if the extra room in the case will make a difference.. i'll leave that up to you but I doubt it matters. just thought id bring it up.

I thought you did.
you could back it down to 19-20 but I'd advise a filler at that point.

Look at Trail Boss or 5744 for subsonic loads with big lead. Both can be reduced at minimal risk. SR-4759 used to be the way to go, but, is discontinued.

You should find a fun load. thanks rch

I like your thinking, I just bought a Win. 70 in .375 H&H and am going to be shooting reduced loads. No sense killing your shoulder. I'll be shooting a 300 grain at about 2000-2100 instead of 2500. Have fun, and save a couple of full power rounds for your macho friends.:)

the only time I ever shot the 458 mag was in a handgun.
it wasn't too bad, but I like the 45-70 revolver better.

I cleaned the cases this afternoon

Then I got roped into helping my sister in law remove a cat from her mothers house
A large fishing net was used , after we got the darn cat out from under a bed

Darn cat used up 10 lives after we caught it

Don't forget Unique, 10 to 15 grains, does nice in 45-70. Should be very easy on the shoulder.

My goodness, I use 26.5 A2400 in a BFR 45/70 with a 515 gr bullet. Not deep seated though.
I use 28 gr A2400 in a 458 Win Mag with a 550 gr bullet.

70% free case under projectile fill of trail boss. Will be like a bunny fart...

I loaded 30 rounds , 6 loads of 5 each

Funny thing , I have been given over 2 boxes of 500 gr FMJ and 60 or so 500 gr sp

I know the SP bullets were from a short lived 460 idea another club member had

jacketed bullets shoot well on top of cast boolit loads.
one of my first deer was taken with a 200gr speer bullet on top of unique in my 8 mauser.

I've often wondered about using a .458 case full of black powder, sort of a modern day rendition of the Sharps .45 2 4/10" case.

A modern bolt gun should handle that easily
