I was fooling around and looked at the 1000's of 308 brass I have with no 308, I know get one! but here is what I did.
I have a 7.65x53 Mauser and it looked like they were close except .51 and .53 so I put 8 grains of Unique in the resized case they fired ok and had acceptable accuracy. Is this going to hurt? never would consider a heaver load that the 175g .314 bollit and 8-9g Unique.
Here is what a fire-formed 308 looks like beside a fired 7.65x53 case. Thr five to the left are the 308's and the one to the right is the 7.65x53.

Looks like a shorter neck is the only problem, but if they shoot ok, what the heck. DALE

The short neck on the 7.53 Argentine makes carefull reloading a must as it is easy to start a bullet a little off. The shorter neck on the 308 cases makes the problem a little worse but they should fire ok. I personaly don't do much cartridge conversion as I prefer properly marked brass and with Privi as cheap as it is froms Graf's I just quit necking down and triming the 8mm's. I suppose if I had a thousand or so 308's I'd sell some and buy some new Argentine brass.

I don't see a problem, except with the shorter neck. As I have stated in several other threads, I have never had good luck with cast boolits in short necked cases. I seem to get some leading and reduced accuracy with shorter necked rounds. I am sure that if I went to the faster burning pistol powders I would most likely reduce this problem greatly, as I like to in 30 cal's shoot faster burning rifle powders like 4895, 4320, and 3031. I have a theory that the slower burning powders tend to work on the sides of the boolit before they fully enter the bore, and the longer neck helps prevent that. With the 8 gr of Unique, I doubt you will have that problem. If the boolits seat straight and the accuracy is acceptable, then go for it. I would just resize a box or two at a time, as they will not have a valid head stamp once you do. I have a 6mm 06 and have ammo that has 30-06, 270win, 280 rem, and 25-06 head stamps. I just make sure the box is clearly marked.

Best wishes form the Boer Ranch,

Joe

I dunno. With all that brass, it looks to me like you're in perfect position to get into the .358 Winchester. [smilie=1:

Looking at the picture, you have a stretch ring on each of your fireformed cases. Is this a mark from the chamber or the sizing die? Either way, I'd consider this a neat experiment of what you could do if you had to. I'd either invest in actual cases or cutdown my 8mm/30-06 cases first and save my 308 brass for that family of cartridges (243,260, 7-08, 308 and 358).

My NRA Excellent 1891 Argentine rifle is IMO the finest milsurp I have ever fired. Even with issue sights and Mark 1936 eyeballs, the long sighting radius and my shooting glasses make it scary accurate. Thanks to friend Urny's file-trim die I have plenty of cases formed from Federal and Remington .30/06. Again, IMO, the 7.65 has a short enough neck as issued so I don't want to make it any worse. As KCSO said, with Privi brass being so affordable, why bother? With 16.0 gr. Alliant 2400 and Lyman 314299 sized .312" for my rifle's .311" groove, 1.5" groups at 100 yd. are the rule when I do my part.

My 1891 Argentine is in such fine condition I wouldn't risk ruining the chamber with short cases. Even with issue sights and Mark 1936 eyeballs it is scary accurate. A load of 16.0 gr. Alliant 2400 and Lyman 314299 delivers 1.5" 100 yd. groups when I do my part. My cases are .30/06 formed thanks to friend Urny's file-trim die. Even if I had to (ugh) buy cases it would be worth the trouble, but then I am one of the mossbacks that doesn't shoot .38s in a .357 revolver. I'll bet somebody on the Swappin and Sellin page would be glat to trade .30/06 for .308.

This is probley the only time I will do that I was just curious! Wish some one had left this one alone they have taken the rear sight of and replaced it with a sight and cut the barrel off and put a ramp front sight + drilled and taped it, then cut the stock off. It shoots real good and I got it for $50 so I can play a little. I put a black powder rear sight on it one that has elevation and windage, it also looks like a Mauser rear sight. Have a front sight for a '98 Mauser ring and all might see how much I have to turn down the barrel to put it on.
