Last night I was given a large quantity of .30 carbine brass. There was a fair number of LC 56 brass in it that appears to be nickel plated. Does anybody know anything about this? I never saw it before.

I heard rumor that some navel units got plated brass to fight corrosion, but that is just hear-say and I can't back that up.

Is it nickel plated or chrome plated? I have seen late 50's or early 60's military brass that was chrome plated for dress parades. I am not certain, but I believe this would ruin it for reloading. It does make a nice "military" souvenir.

I've seen nickel plated 5.56 Lake City brass before.

Hey Fourarmed,

I have nickle plated 45acp that is stamped FA 42. I did a group buy some years back for about 15k of the stuff. Ended up keeping 6k I think. The guy I got it from said it was test ammo. I found a couple in the lot that were not fired, copper RN, still primed. I did not pull them down as I wanted to keep them in my collection. The pockets are tight (I mean TIGHT). They are / were not crimped just tight. When I got it I deprimmed the stuff I kept then tumbled it. I left some running for maybe 2 days and the nickle got thin to the point you could see a slight brass color in it. Just traded some to Wiljen (I think) for some 357 MAX brass. He loaded it all and from what he said, it was a bear to prime them with the hand primer he has. With the ones I have loaded I can tell the difference when priming them in the dillon.

How much of that did you get and are you going to part with any? If so, I would be interested in some.

Are you sure that's not steel cases which were produced for the military in the early stages of WWII? I have some of that marked EC42.

if you are asking about my cases, yes I am absolutely sure. I have damaged some to the point the brass is obvious.

Those are Proof Loads. The military identified them with the nickel cases to ensure that Joe wouldn't use them to go target practice with. They are loaded to ensure the safety of the rifle when firing normal ammo. If it could handle the Proof Load (usually loaded to around 70k PSI versus the standard 45-50k of a service load) than the rifle was deemed safe to be used.

I can't advise you using the bullets on a regular basis as repeated shooting of rounds loaded to that pressure will undoubtedly loosen your rifle up.

As I said in my first post, this is brass, not loaded rounds. I'm guessing there might be something like 50 of them, and the ones I have examined have a red sealer around the primer, so I think they are once fired. No. 1, pm me your address and I will mail you a few if you want them.
