For the 444 shooters out there starline has 444 brass listed on their sight. Since brass can be tough to come by this is a good chance to get stocked up on some hard to find brass.

if Starline can make 444 Marlin and 358 Winchester it shouldn't be much of a stretch for them to make 356 Win.
It's worth an e-mail to request it.

The .444 has been around a long time and it has a little bit of popularity.
The .356 is almost non existent. I doubt they will ever make brass for it. I could be wrong.
Even the larger companies have quit on the .35 Remington and it was much more popular in more rifles over more years than the .444.

Gentlemen:

I have two rifles in this caliber, both single shots.

I liked the 444 because it is right between the 45s and the 40s as per bore size.

Since these are traditional singleshot rifles I had the barrels stamped "44/63 Ballard" since the 444 wasn't around when the rifles were originally introduced.

These guns have done well over the years - once I realized that there were NO 44 caliber bullet molds suitable for long range shooting available.

Since I had barreled the rifles with barrels with 1:16 twists I knew I could work right on up there as per bullet weight. ~ I contacted Paul Jones and he made me a wonderful 500 grain 44 mold!

Long live the 44!

Forest-- I own a Marlin 444XLR which has a 1:20 twist and Ballard rifling. The boolit I use in mine is the MP-433-300 in either HP or solid version. I use Reloder 7 in mine, what powder do you use with that big thumper?

I have a cigar box of fired 356 brass. I dont shoot the caliber, but would trade for calibers I use or sell it outright

Shuz:

I worked with various combinations - lots of them.

In the Stevens 441/2 my final combination for various Quigley-type matches was 28 gr of some surplus stuff called "#28" which was similar to Accurate 2015, a 0.009 over-powder card, and 15 grs hominy grits under the 500 gr PB Jones. This didn't provide anything like tack-driving accuracy but it was very consistent.

In the FBW I used 19.5 gr IMR 4759 a 0.009 over-powder card, T/P filler and what we called an "IGC" or Inverted Gas Check - a 44 caliber check inserted under the bullet up-side-down to protect the bullet base from gas-cutting.

Also in the FBW an NEI number 44-375-GC gave outstanding 100 yard groups with 19.5 gr 4759 and T/P filler..but it fell apart at anything over about 600 yards. ~ Poor ballistic shape..

Both these rifles are smokeless items but I found that pushing them with 500 gain bullets didn't work for me. All I got was more and more serious recoil and no better performance at long range. To get more wind restive way out there they would have to be launched at 2000 ft/sec. Even when I was younger I was being pounded enough at 1800.

FAsmus--thanks for the info. I have found that even a 300g slug at 2200 fps whaps the old shoulder pretty good, or perhaps it's pretty bad, from my XLR 444 Marlin. I see no need to aid more weight and misery!

I think the .356 Winchester can be made from .444 brass.

I think the .356 Winchester can be made from .444 brass.

.358 is the .308 necked up,
take a .444, neck it down, trim a hair off the length and rim diameter and you have the .356 Win.
easy peasy if you are Starline and receive enough requests.
