If you could only have 10 powders, what would they be and who would care?:-?

fastdadio

I'm trying to get down to 3. I think I'm close. 4064, titegroup, and 231. With these powders I load, 30-30, 30-06, 308, 45acp, .44mag, .357. Never had more than 5 in the locker at any one time. Not counting black powder. Is front stuffin considered reloading?

Anything close to those that is on sale gets bought.

I have a lot more more but can do without them if things get tough. Could drop HP38 if I needed to but have a bunch of loads worked up with it.

Why would i want ten different powders?

runfiverun

you wouldn't want that many but the way things are [have been] going you'll end up with that many just to keep something close to what you really want on hand.

Com'on fellers. This was a sarcastic thread to point out how little I think of all the senseless polls ("if you could only have three _____ [insert any reloading item, gun or caliber]"). Hence the "who cares?"..."

Jayhawkhuntclub

Why don't you do a poll on how many people like polls?
Personally, my only issue with them is when people leave out obvious options or "none of the above."

runfiverun
10-30-2016, 09:52 AM
oh I caught the tongue in cheek part.

but 10 powders would actually be a [somewhat] realistic number for someone with a broad range of calibers and interests in the shooting world.
I could probably get by with 8 or so but I have 7 go-to rifle powders as it is.
they allow me enough latitude to find a good load in just about anything.

I have a couple of outliers for just in case type stuff where something just doesn't respond to the regulars.
I don't understand why someone would handicap their self with 2 rifle powders and expect the best performance from 5-6 different case volumes.
yes I could get by with 4895 [I really could] or I could tune things a little bit better by going to 3031 or 4064 or 414 or... so why not have it on hand.

Heck, I have at least 17 without looking, and I'm pretty small time compared to more than a few on here.

farmerjim
10-30-2016, 10:08 AM
I probably have at least 15. About 10 are only 1 or 2 pounds, but they are there to try new loads with if I can't get the standbys to work.

Frank V
10-30-2016, 11:07 AM
Ten different powders seems like a good start?
I remember when we couldn't find Unique here. I was casting around for a substitute & found some Herco. I worked up several loads & found it quite suitable.
Of course we all know HP38 is WW231, H414 is WW760, H110 is WW296, & HS6 is WW540! WW540 has been discontinued for quite a while. I called Hodgdon & spoke with their ballistition about those two & his words were yup same stuff, comes out of the same spout.
So if we can't find one maybe the other is available.
Good shooting.

Yea. I caught the needless sarcasm. If you dont like the poll, dont read it, dont respond too it. Simple as that.
Maybe some of us found it interesting....especially the responses that included as to "why" they chose those 3 powders.

I could get by w/ 5 pretty easily. If I got rid of 10mm and 375 H&H I could go back to three. For many years I only used three powders. I was always able to find accurate loads. I'm not a BR shooter so if it's close to MOA it's good to go.

This is what I had on hand before the last boating accident. I can't believe I lost all that powder in the lake over the weekend :(

Get rid of a .375 H&H??? Arrrrrggggg no no no never:cry:! Most don't realize how good GREAT a cartridge it is!!
Doesn't kick your teeth out & will handle anything on the planet.

runfiverun

it's a good deer cartridge too.
I helped a bud work up a load for the 200gr Hornady meant for the 375 Winchester in his H&H.
it actually shot pretty accurately.

I said IF :p
I'm not getting rid of the 10mm either. If the 375 H&H wasn't so heavy I would consider it for deer. But a 336 in 35 Remington or 1894C are enough for this area.

Frank V
11-02-2016, 12:55 PM
I've taken several deer with the .375 H&H & it doesn't blow them up. The 270gr Hornaday will penetrate end for end on a 150lb deer.
runfiverun, boy if you run that 200gr as fast as it can be run in the .375 it might act like a varmint bullet?
I've gotten the 235gr Speer to 2900, & that's probably way too fast for deer?
Hmmm the .375 H&H Mag. is a pretty big pole!
Here it's considered a big bore, in Africa it's a medium bore.

runfiverun
11-03-2016, 10:55 AM
I wouldn't run it up to 3-K for sure but at just past 375 win velocity's it works just right.

it's like the 86gr 25-20 bullets I use in my 257R Arisaka at 2400 fps.
I'm past what the 25-20 can do with the bullet, but for the yotes and such it is a whole new ball game.
put them in the 250-3,000 at 3,000 fps and they are great for removing rock chucks and ground squirrels from the gene pool, and the rock they are sitting on, and their head from their body.

I have at least that many but load for 25 diff calibers. I could probably narrow it to 5 for rifle & pistol. IT would be a compromise in some calibers though.

I caught the sarcastic "who cares" part but its still a fun thread. I don't have quite as many powders as Rinfiverun or Dragon but I'm close. I load for nearly 30 calibers and with many of those I have loads that go from mild to wild and light bullet to heavy bullet. Some of these powders were experiments so I could reduce the number of powders some, but 10 might be tough to get to.

Frank V
11-06-2016, 05:58 PM
runfiverun, at those velocities it should do very well.
I've got a great reduced load for the .30-30 using the Hornaday or Speer 100gr SJ. It turns the .30-30 into a .32-20. Amazing what we can do safely handloading.
Guess the .30-30 is a medium pole?[smilie=1:

you can get the 30-30 down to a super heavy 22 mag with a 98gr rnfp and 4-5grs of a fast powder.
grouse and stuff like that are in big trouble out to 50 yds and it's quiet.

Frank V
11-06-2016, 11:13 PM
Oh yes, I've taken a number of Grey Squirrels with the light load in the .30-30. If memory serves it's about a 1,450fps load very fun & I've shot many 1" groups at 50yds with it. I'd have to check my records, but if I remember correctly I'm using 700X.

I have loaded 123 gr. balls in my .44 Magnums (.432" w/45-45-10). Fun load in my revolvers and pretty accurate in my 10" Contender. If there were any squirrels around here I think I'd try that load on them...

it works.
make sure you seat the boolit down on the powder so it compresses it.

4895 pretty much duplicates it except for the smoke and boom.

Frank V
11-10-2016, 08:06 PM
I have used BP in the .44 Mag, but it's been so long I've forgotten the results.
I'd have to go pour over several years worth of reloading notes to find how it worked.
