I hunt between Marathon and Alpine and know what you mean. Next time you are out there, take a drive that starts at Fort Davis and head westbound on FM2424 past the McDonald Observatory and toward Kent. Take FM 505 south and TX 606 back to Fort Davis. This is some of highest and prettiest country in Texas. The drive will take a couple of hours and is best done early or late in the day because of the wildlife you will see. Both species of deer, pronghorn, elk, bear, and just about any kind of critter you can think of.

A great place to stay is Indian Lodge (http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/findadest/parks/indian_lodge/) and stay in the old part of the Lodge. I will get some pictures up a bit later of IL and my hunting ground.

I pay a high price to hunt the place I do but my last penny will be spent doing it. It is unbelievable country which the public never gets to see.

I almost took a job in Alpine in '94 or so.....think long and hard about living in that sort of isolation before you move....I love the area, but my family just couldn't live there.

I came in on hoghway 67 out of San Angelo and went back home taking 17 to the north. I left about 3:30 in the afternoon and saw both pronghorn and Mulies in the middle of the day.

Longhorn: I moved out south of Abilene (FROM DFW) to get some Isolation about 2 years ago. Me no scared. The family would love it

In passing through San Angelo, did you by chance see CarpetMan in one of his favorite pursuits, stalking cats, or err... stalking sheep?

Carpetmann found an army surplus store. To save the sheeps delicate feet He put combat boots (WW2 type) on them. They are easy to approach now and no sore feet.

Carpetman IS the great and Almighty sheep herder. I am in training, but wish to aspire to such greatness one day.
