View Full Version : I get the idiot award for the day

I recently built my 17y/o daughter an AR15 in 300AAC for strictly shooting supersonic loads. I cerakoted it in a 4 color sponge on camo, which you can see in the picture blends in quite well. Topped off the rifle with a Vortex 3-9x40 with an illuminated reticle for shooting hogs close to dark. I diligently loaded up some ammo using Lil Gun and Sierra 125gr prohunters. Went to the range today to put the first shots through it, sight in the scope, adjust the adjustable gas block, and start my load work up. Took 3 shots adjust gas block and another 2 to get sighted in. Loads weren't that great. May have to switch to a new powder or bullet. Shot 47 out of the 50 I loaded, I noticed the scope reticle had turned. Just shoot me, I never tightened up the scope rings on th scope. Wasted range trip. So, I get the idiot of the day award. Live and learn.

I would be afraid I would set that thing down somewhere and forget it. Maybe a little too good on the camo. LOL

Drat the bad luck -- now you have to (get to) go to the range again.

Good looking build.

My thought too! As far as dumb mistake, big deal. A trip to the range is a trip to the range, it's never a bad thing. Unless you do like I did and drive all the way there and then realize you forgot the gate key! DOH!!

Thanks for the compliments on the camo. Started off with a base coat of graphite black, then sponged on sniper gray, then OD Green, then flat dark earth. Below is my AR10 in 7mm-08 that I built at the same time.

You're in good company, I saw Brian Zins do the same with a red dot at the regionals a few years ago.

So you wasted some powder, primers, and projectiles. There's a whole lot worse you can do. Torque the scope rings, re-zero, and re-test your loads.

Great looking gun!
No worries on the mistake. It's not like you left something in the barrel and found out on the first shot!

Are you using a torque wrench on the scope screws?

n10sivern
10-19-2016, 05:22 PM
I normally do. This is what I think happened. I mounted the rifle and leveled the scope and just snugged the screws until i torqued them down, and I guess I forgot to torque them.

I'll see your stupid and raise you a scope cut; my one and only scope cut came from a t/c encore with magnum type loads, new scope new rifle did not tighten rings down after bore sighting, second shot it slide back in the rings and busted my nose wide open, so don't feel to bad; I did as my nose was already broken.

As long as anyone is confessing last week I was loading up a couple of 1911s for a range trip. One 9mm + one .45 so I took everything out of my range bag to make sure I had the right magazines. Got all loaded up, made it to the range, got all set up, lets shoot.

DOH! I forgot my ammo. I had taken the bag out getting set up and left it sitting on the counter.

Well, you could have not noticed, blamed it on the scope and bought another.

I had a student show up for a CCW re-qualification shoot. He forgot his magazine for his pistol. Not very practical, but he shot the course of fire, single shot. He carpooled to class with four of his buddies. I would of like to have been in the car for the ride home, just to hear the comments......

On the plus side, it will be a long time before you forget to tighten the scope screws again...

I can't tell you just how long that will be; I am still reminded of it every single time I put a different scope on a rifle.

I'd say the day was a success your end goal is just a little further down the road.
you know your ammo works, and that's enough of a reason for a range trip any time.
so the way I look at it is your just being prudent in your load development.

Loaded several magazines and headed for the range. Discovered that the magazines fit ok, but the 6.5 Grendel won't chamber in a 5.56.

The plus is that now you know the ammo will run the rifle. It is miserable to find out at the range the ammo won't run. That is a wasted trip.

Not a completely wasted trip. Beats being at work. The rifle
functioned well.

My go to load for all my 300 BO is a 110gr Vmax (or ZMax) with a full load of 296. Sub MOA out to 200 yards, the furthest I've had on paper with my Sig M400 Hunter model.

I've done that....usually the bag of ammo/loads I've wanted to test gets left behind and I end up just shooting my normal rounds :D.

I thought you were going to say that you took the rifle out to check it, set it down while putting up fresh targets, and now you can't find it because of the camoflage.

That would have killed me. I have some money in that thing. Black hole weaponry barrel, pws muzzle brake, and geissele trigger.

You could put a dot of paint then on the screw and mount after you retorque and if they are not across from each other know that a) you hadn't torqued or b) the screw had come loose.

The logistics of remembering everything needed for your trip to the range can be quite daunting.Leaving a Rifle Bolt at home seems to be a regular and aggravating thing.I have at times forgotten my Range Rod,Spotting Scope,Shooting Matt,Rifle Rest.Sometimes I check and double check and still find I have left something, maybe it will not interfere with shooting but it would be nice to have the thing as arranged.I keep meaning to take just one rifle to simplify the list but I like to try out at least three whilst there.Doh.

After too many screw-ups I made lists and laminated them. One for pistol shooting, rifle shooting, and hunting. Before I load up I get the list out and place it on the workbench and load from it. Then I double check it. So far so good.
