There are a lot of cast iron ladles on eBay labeled as jumbo 3, jumbo 4, jumbo 4.5, etc. I googled and couldn't find a table to show how much each ladle should hold and it's hard to tell from pics. Anybody have a reference for what the jumbo ladles are?

Do the look like these?

The # has precious little to do with how much they hold. I have a Rowell # 8 that will handle 40lbs, I smelt about 30lbs at a time using a weed burner for a heat source. The ladle has a nice flat bottom and is a bottom pour, works okay for my needs.

Axe the seller. If they don't know how much it will hold they can at least give depth/width of the bowl.

I have a lot of lead to smelt and cast into ingots. I used a stainless soup ladle before but it was flimsy. These are what I am looking at. Which ones do you think would be the best for pouring 2# ingots? All of them are similar prices, $20-30 shipped

1) 10" long, 4.5" wide

2) #4, 15" long, no width listed
179017

3) #3.5 Jumbo, 14.5" long, no width listed
179021

4) 15" long, 4" width
179018

5) No widths listed. The smaller one is 15" and longer one is 18". Might be the best deal since it includes 2 ladles

6) #4 jumbo, 15.25" long. No width listed
179020

7) Flat bottom, 9" long, no width listed

Also keep in mind what a ladle holds is better described as a volumne not weight since alot are used with zinc alloys mish metals and or aluminum besides lead alloies. A cast iron or steel pot may work better with a ladle just to dip and pour. In most areas garage sales can supply most everything needed for a free standing smelter very reasonanly. A turkey frier or fish frier stand and even the burner are quite useable. Add a cast iron dutch oven or cut off 25# propane tank for a pot and 100-300lbs can be done in a batch easily. The rowel ladles are very good and go from 1 lb to ust ober 80 lbs. There are some 2 man models also. When getting into ladles bigger than 5-8lbs a 2 hand model can be a big plus also. My smelting ladle was made from a 4" pipe cap and 3/4" black iron pipe this ladle holds about 10 lbs and is a 2 hand desighn. I dip and pour with it but melt and clean in a bigger pot.

as for answer
and this generic

the measurement across the top is very close to LBS it holds

if they say it 1 1/2 it will dip level full 1 and 1/2lbs of PURE lead
if they say it a no 4----- It will dip 4lbs of PURE lead
if it some home made you are on your own
most factory stuff was made from cast iron as it holds heat.
if you are going to pour a lot of ingots look for a No6
it will cost in shipping as the handle is about 30in but is worth it

I have about 500# of lead to smelt. Just looking for better options than I had the last time I smelted.

Not so, my Rowell #8 will dip 40 pounds of PURE lead, how do you account for that? I'm just saying there is no generic answer.

Go here; http://www.advancecarmover.com/large-rowell-ladles.aspx and scroll down to the "ladle dimensions" and it will give one a good estimate of what a ladle will hold based on volume. It is in a pdf form and easily read. Takes most of the guess work out of trying to cipher it on ones own.

very intrest ingredients topic, I mist admit I ready the thread to say jumbo ladies sizes and clicked on it to see the feedback and flaming, I guess sometimes I need to read with both eyes and make sure my brain is getting it right! but now I'm looking for a jumbo ladle, I have several large soft pucks to smelt that won't fit in anything other than my large cast iron pot and a big JUMBO ladle makes a lot of sense!

Perhaps what you are seeking is a "jumbo" SIZED ladle?
