My dealer told me yesterday that starting July 1st, my CCW would no longer be accepted as an alternative to the Federally mandated Brady Check. Instead, all buyers will have to pay $25 for a Brady Check. Suppose to be free, right? Nevada law requires the check to go through the state police organization who will charge us $25 and then call the FBI who will check it for them-for free. Another way for the state to make money. We went through this a few years ago for a while because the FBI said the sheriffs weren't properly keeping up their records. I don't know what it is this time.

Please don't let NY know about this money making scheme.

When the Brady Bill became law, all states had the option to have checks run by the FBI or run their own checks. Tennessee saw the wisdom (as in profits) of the offer and instantly (sorry for the pun!) turned it into a money-maker. Their program is managed by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation whose program manager believed there would be only modest volume in calls. They opened shop with a total of 10 call takers working through the entire week. Wrong move! Their staff is considerably larger now, and still stays backed up for incoming calls. Can't recall the actual numbers, but they generate over $1 million per year now, and that from $10 a throw for the call. Looks like we're going to be dealing with the same TBI for this service for a long time on out from here. As state budgets tighten, all revenue sources is going to be protected.

does the federal law really allow this?

Tennessee doesn't let you use your handgun carry permit card, either. I'm told the feds wouldn't accept it.

A permit won't work here in Alabama either. My dealer makes the phone call & I walk out with the gun, it takes about 10 minutes & there's no rip-off charge to make the call.

Yes it is legal according to the feds. Here in Clarksville (Tn),there is a store (Grandpas),that if you put a gun on lay a way, they charge you $10 for the back ground check, when you go to pay it off and pick it up,they charge you again.I called ATF,they said yes,it is unethical, but they are not in the business of telling business' how to run thier operations. However if I go 10 miles north to Ky,they don't charge for a back ground check.Ky goes through the FBI,Tn goes through the state TBI,who inturn calls the feds. This then is when the fee comes in ,$10 phone call.

There is no fee in Indiana. They call while you wait. But it could change. In used to take CCW as proof.

Sounds like registration to me. FBI supposedly has been taken to task over maintaining a data base (call information), and supposedly has to flush their record after the call, per the law. Anyone remember that dealy that they were maintaining the records 'for training purposes'? I wonder if the state keeps or destroys the record?

The words "shall not be infringed" come to mind.
Charging you a fee to allow access to your 2nd Amendment right is an 'infringement', in my book.

Tennesse is becoming quite liberal in some of its politics,I think Crokett would be upset.I want to go home.
