I stopped by the thrift store tonight on the way home from work... mostly the same junk as last week. I did spot something different and checked it's marking, but it didn't say Pewter. It is fairly soft and for $1.16 I figured I'd take a chance and bring it home.

The marking is incomplete, but is one oval about 3/4" with another oval inside of it about 1/2" with the following markings which are partially missing

?NAN
?AN KATIN
INDONESIA

178627178628

The material seems softer than the other piece that I brought home last week with a known pewter stamp. I am able to impress my thumbs into this piece.

I put a bic lighter under the lip, and after about 10 seconds it was melting and dripping (looked like my bench under my Lee pot :-).

Any ideas?

Thanks - Randy

Pewter from different countries use different formulations. Indonesia is real nice pewter. Would have to check to be sure but maybe higher tin and less antimony so less hard than say Dutch zinn (tin or what they call pewter) or British, American, etc.

Rotometals sells three varieties https://rotometals.com/pewter-alloys/
English pewter https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_pewter is not Indonesian pewter.
This lists several mixes http://www.neymetals.com/product/pewter-alloys/ with different hardeners or percentages.

You did good to trust your instincts. Will say never found any pewter "made in china" despite finding some stuff that looked like it, just too hard (thumbnail couldn't scratch the back). On the other hand Indonesia doesn't make much cast aluminum as far as I know.
