Bad Water Bill

I received an offer yesterday that I am not sure how to handle. I went to my local paperback exchange yesterday. I told the owner I had no books to trade in as I was going to send all of my books to Walter Reed. Here is where I need help. Nancy,s statement was "you supply the postage and I will DONATE the books to our troops". This small mom and pop store has over 600K books on shelves, in bags, boxes and on the floor. :coffee: All suggestions on how to get this much needed project off the ground will be appreciated. :coffee: I will have the store info available if anyone wants to check on the offer. I will be able to help them pack the books for shipping. BWB

Media mail is the way to go, cheaper than Priority Mail or Parcel Post. Here is a link to the USPS web page with Media Mail shipping rates on it. (http://www.usps.com/prices/media-mail-prices.htm) Post it here when they are ready to go and some of us (Me, for one) will send them some shipping money. If I were them I'd set up a PayPal account to receive donations. Forget the anti-gun bullshit, you'll get THREE times as much money from people if you make it easy for them to contribute. A minute or two on the computer is far, far easier than driving down to the Post Office and standing in line half an hour. Keep us informed.

Thank you I should have a separate bank acct and pay pal acct set up by Mon eve. Will be going to Office Max tomorrow to see if boxes can be donated. If this works out would like to get a list of all the V A hospitals and lest we forget the V A retirement places. I hope I am not dreaming to big. What do you people think? BWB

Rock On... but make sure the VA knows what's coming so nobody decides to recycle the lot...
You know how efficient/effective Gooberment is.
I would also let some media outlets &/or the Legion/VFW know so they can track the progress/get involved.

I will be stopping at the local V F W tomorrow to see if they can help. I also have an excellent connection to about 5 other V A Hospitals in Il and Wi and am working on one in In. I know there are many more hospitals out there so if anyone wants a box sent to a special hospital all they will have to do is make the donation, give me the addy and notify the hospital that a box is on the way. Thanks to Ken, Scrounger and Old Ironsights for the info and support.:drinks: BWB

Well here is where I am at today. There is a new bank acct opened and am working with paypal to hopefully have a new acct for this project only. The V F W hall in Lansing Il will have a van full of new boxes for free tomorrow. Next step is to talk to the P O about pickup and rates. I am sorry I didnt get more done this weekend but a nasty summer cold got hold of me and doesnt want to turn loose. With any luck the first box will be heading to Walter Reed on Wed. Again thanks for your support and input. These vets in the hospitals need all the help we can give them BWB

Having moved a few times, hit the local liquior stores for their empty boxes. Plenty strong and will raise more than a few eyebrows when folks get a load of the advertising on the boxes. Frank

How is this working out? I might be able to find some money that could be spent this way and at least sleep a little better that I am helping my other DAV's that are less well off then me for now.

I would be willing to helpout with $ . Also I was wandering, I have stacks of old Gun Magazines. Would there be a need or want for old outdated magazines for our Vets? Lets not forget them, they are the reason we can chat about whatever we want to chat about. I know most everyone on this site knows this and feels the same but I had to say it anyway.

Well here is the bad news. WE HAVE DETERMINED that any money you receive is income and you MUST pay Fed. State, S S and local taxes as it is considered income unless you are a 501 c 3 organization and chartered and licensed. If any one would be willing to figure a way of helping I can give you about 100 boxes that will hold a good 50# of books. I still have access to the paperbacks but at 72 just do not want to jump thru all of their hoops.

Have you checked with VFW or American Legion post? Might be a great project with their help.

I just got back in bill. If you get a specific apo and use flat rate boxes it is a little easier on the sender. Soldiers angels is a great resource on finding out how to send stuff cheaply and effectively,because...man do they send a ton of stuff! good luck and thank you for people like yourself and the others that take the time and money to support us while we are in country. Please also try to get these things to the guys who could use them. More often than not the shipment get's halted at some massive fob and the pogues rat the box for what they want and just can the rest. Then the guys living like rats out in those tiny patrol bases(like us) still dont get those kind gestures. The pogues have unlimited internet access, gyms, and on and on. They live in mini america's and have regular work schedules. Find a unit who is out in it, and make sure it goes to them. That way your money, time, and wonderfully kind gesture wont go to waste. If you need any help, please pm me and i will do what i can. Joel

We have people all over. Some of the dog rescues will transport 25 or so miles to the next driver. All it takes is a little coordination. Books may be a little heavier and they don't walk on their own, but nothing is perfect. With enough hands the work is light. The Legion may be able to do this. Ask. Another thought is to get the VFW or Legion to open a PayPal for this cause. they are tax exempt.
