Accurate 5744 cross references but I haven't tried it in 30-30. I've used Unique in both with reduced loads with good results.

3031. With a 400 + gr. boolit I use 40 grains of 3031 in the .45-70 and with the 30-30 I use 30 grains of 3031 and a 150 gr jacketed.

Give a look at IMR 3031. I've loaded for both with it.

Be careful.

Alliant's Reloader No.7 is one of the very best for those two cartridges.

There's published data for IMR 4198 in both calibers, in the recent edition of theLyman Cast Bullet Handbook.

Accurate 2015, IMR 3031, 4198(IMR or Hodgdon), Reloder 7 all work for moderate to top-end loads with most bullet weights; Accurate 5744 and IMR 4227 work well for moderate/intermediate loading; bullets outside 'normal range' might make some other powders better

If I could only have 1, it would most likely be H-4198

3031, SR4759 if you can find it.

I load for .223,.243, and 45-70. I use Varget because i can use it in all 3. Im using the 325 gr cast rcbs in the 45-70.

I think Varget is more suitable in the 30-30 then the 45-70 but is listed first(in Hodgdon 06 basic) for 300 gr Sierra and a 400 gr cast (45-70 obviously).
It is listed at the top of the 2006 Hodgdon Basic reloaders manual for 150 gr and 170 gr 30-30 also. But the 30-30 loads were jacketed.

If you load for other rifles and dont want a big stock of different powders on hand, Varget might be a good choice.

Another benefit of Varget is it seems to be easier on cast bullets... as it is with other powders on the slower side of the scale. No leading problems so far. But only pushing the 325's (lead base... not GC)at approx 1720 fps. Also, there is little free space in the case, as with some other powders. Even at minimum loads. 52 gr minimum for me, using the above mentioned 325 gr RCBS cast.

The downside.... Varget is a little on the slow side for a big, strait wall cartridge like the 45-70. You will get a little unburned powder in the action. Should be cleaner in the 30-30.

SR4759 is my go to as I have just less than 20# of it. 4198 and 3031 work well too. Be careful with RL7 if you download in 45-70 as it can act weird without filler as some folks have had SEE in 458WM and 45-70 when there was much free space in the case.

Re 7 will do well, just a little faster than 3031

I'd check out leverevolution. It'll out perform almost anything in these 38,000 psi and below ctgs.

3031 will push the boolet as fast as the cartridge (30-30) will let it. I started using it for condom boolits before I was casting. I keep my 45-70 loads to Marlin level and it does what I want. That is with flat plain based boolits, as well. No GC's.

Plus one on the Reloader 7. I also like Unique for both calibers.

Betcha can't get 2500 fps with a 150 grain boolit with those other powders. On hodgdon's site nothing else goes beyond 2300 fps. Not material with cast boolits MAYBE - but it sounds like it might be one of those powders that make higher velocities work with cast. I'd guess that heat treated, and coated bullets could go higher (anneal the noses).

3031 has been best. Varget is also a great powder. I use a lot of 4759 but in the 30-30 it was not as good as 3031 for groups. 4198 is touchy.
Fast shotgun powders never did good.

For those of you using 2400 for 45-70, is there a recommended starting weight for a 400 gn boolit listed anywhere? I love it for my 30-30, maybe I'll load a few for the 45-70 when my stock of SR4759 runs out.

I love imr4198, and there are loads for many rifle cartridges, also it uses fewer grains per round, in 45-70 it uses or almost uses 10 grains less per round, I also use it in my mosin nagant with good results, it burns pretty clean also! It would be hard to convert me to anything else, unless there just wasn't any to be had! have a good one! Travis

I haven't loaded .45-70 in a few years but in .450 Marlin 3031 excelled. I also love it in 30-30 and .300 Savage. For cast and jackets. Best, Thomas.
