View Full Version : What boolit for my 222 Rem?

I've never cast anything smaller than 30 cal, and I am looking to buy a NOE mold for my 222 Rem. What boolit would you recommend for accuracy? I'll be shooting them out of a old factory Rem 700. Thanks!

A friend of mine has shot a fair amount of cast in his .222, mainly prepping for turkey season in his O/U Valmet 12ga/.222. I can't recall which bullet he was using for sure, but I believe it was Lyman's 225415 with the little flat on the point. He found a number of powders worked with it at a bit above and below 2,000 fps. - just right for a turkey load. With NOE, I'd most likely go with a FP if you're planning on using it on game, and something in the 5--55 gr. wt. Was at NOE today looking at their .22 molds, and noted a PB 40 gr. FP that had me really intrigued for another caliber. With very mild loads, it ought to replace a .22 RF? But that would be after getting something like I described above. I doubt you'll have any problems whatsoever in getting it to shoot.

I second the 225415. Get small game stopper.

I've been satisfied with the Lyman 225438 for some time. Been hobbling around the 2300 fps range with 2 MOA accuracy @ 100 yards. 50/50 WW-Linotype air cooled and tumble lubed. Mostly used for fireforming with a K-Hornet, but would not hesitate to use it elsewhere. Might change the alloy to make it a bit softer, something in the Lyman #2 ballpark.

I have NOE's RCBS clone, it does very well in a 222.
Somewhere I posted some targets shooting them through a 222 savage 340.
If you want to save a few bucks, the New Lee .225 mold is also a RCBS clone, but as you can imagine, Lee doesn't always "Nail" a clone.

I think lee got the nose a little flatter.
if so it's a good thing for small game hunting.

I sailed 4 shots through a groud squirrel with the rcbs boolit made with a near lyman-2 alloy.
it just sat there quivering until I head shot it.
man was I getting mad until I walked over and realized I had hit it all 4 times, I was beginning to think I had a matrix squirrel.

I use 225415 over 21 grs 4064 for a very accurate load. MOA the great majority of the time. I don't have a chrony but estimate velocity over 2500 fps. Really hits hard.

Another vote here for the 225415. I shoot it out of a Rem. 700 BDL and get great accuracy.

Is keeping the boolit weight under 50grns a concern, as it is with jacketed bullets, due to the slower twist?

Gyroscopic stability is a function of bullet length rather than weight. Cast bullets will be shorter than jacketed for a given weight, particularly those with a flat nose. Don't sweat the 55 grain weight...

Kinda need to know barrel twist before doling out weights

I believe my twist is 1:14 in the 700

I've been having good luck with the 55 grain Lee flat point in my CZ .222 --2MOA--but it's the only boolit I've tried so far.

Weight is not the factor, length is. Cast bullets are shorter than jacketed for the same given weight.

So I take it you can get away with a heavier boolit with cast? How much heavier?

I'm not sure it this will help or not, but the NOE RCBS clone I mentioned, drops boolits at about 60gr. and worked well in the Savage 340, which is a 1:14

my 1-12 petered out at 64 grs using jacketed the groups size just opened significantly it was better with 60's and done fine with 55's but preferred 50-52.
a slower twist and a slower velocity would probably handle a 55gr bullet okay.
btw my rcbs mold comes in at about 55 grs using a lyman N0-2 near clone add another grain for gas check and lube.
for your rifle you should be able to meet jacketed velocity's with cast if you use some care in the casting and sorting and test some loading practices.
I would probably target something in the 50 gr area just to make sure everything worked together well.
and of course the nose shape is going to help or hurt you as far as over all length.

I've had good accuracy with both the Bator design from Midsouth and Lee's clone of the RCBS 55 grain in a recently purchased 788 .222; this is also a 1:14" twist barrel.

Those are all good suggestions, let me suggest a Lyman 225462 if you happen upon one. My Ruger #1 22-250 just loves this boolit.
