I have a barreled receiver. Model 70 Ser#73xxx.
Suppose to be dated 1947.
It has what looks like a 22 Hornet bolt that is of that date.
Barrel has been replaced.
Is there a way to find out what caliber it was originally?????
Any idea what it might be worth????

If the bolt, extractor, magazine, feed rails and ejector are for the 22 Hornet, it's a safe bet that the original barrel was a Hornet barrel.

I'll not hazard a guess as to value, but you can be assured that it is one of the rarer versions of the old Model 70 if it is an original Hornet.

I think the bolt is from the receiver. It has the first style safety, so it would date from that time.
According to
http://www.midwestgunworks.com/page/mgwi/ctgy/winchester-model-70-information
there are three mounting hole lengths 6 3/8", 7", 7 5/8".
The one I have is, I think 7 5/8". Depends on how it's measured.
That would make it a long action. .270, 30.06, 300Win Mag.
So It might not originally be a 22 Hornet.
I would think it would use the shortest receiver.
I just don't know.

Pre 64 Model 70s were only made in one action length. 22 Hornet to 375 H&H. Various mods were made to the bolt stop and magazine length to accommodate the various lengths of cartridges.

.

The only way to positively determine how that 1947 Model 70's receiver left the factory would be to obtain the information from Winchester's production records @ the Cody Museum in Wyoming.

Given the replacement barrel, it's entirely possible that when the barrel was installed, a Hornet bolt was also used - since the new barrel/chamber would have needed to be headspaced anyway.
